A state record falls and the rankings get several new leaders in week #6

Records continue to fall as some of the best athletes in New England prepare for the post season.  Several high profile invitationals were on the schedule, but the record breaking spree started prior to the weekend.  Most notably, Brendan Sullivan of Westford Academy set a new state record in the pole vault with his 15'7" mark against Lincoln-Sudbury and Tyngsboro on Wednesday.  Sullivan broke the 1998 record of 15'5" set by Wesley Shaw of St. John's and is now ranked US#39.

It was a record breaking Monday for the PVIAC with five school records falling in dual meet action.  Trent George (100m / 10.9), Xavier Whitaker (400m / 51.1), A.J. Cummings (Discus / 126'8") and Luda Kravchenko (Pole Vault / 7'8") were all added to their school's record books.  In addition, the Chicopee Comprehensive 4x100m team of Bryana Wood, Katelyn Bradway, Kassy Klinkowski, and Tiara Wright set a new school record of 54.8 in their dual meet against Cathedral.

Andrea Keklak didn't break any records, but her 800m time of 2:09.0 in a dual meet shows the rest of the state just where the Lincoln-Sudbury star is in her training.  It's frightening to think where she will be in 3 weeks given Coach Phelan's successful history of getting athletes ready for the state championships.

Bishop Feehan traveled to the Loucks Games in New York and posted some impressive marks. Viviana Hanley is now MA#2 with her 10:48.57 performance in the 2 mile.  Katie Cataldo is also MA#2 with her 134'10" throw in the javelin.  Danielle Ebzery is MA#5 following her 37'7.75" leap in the triple jump.  Billy Looney is MA#3 in the 800m with his 1:55.88 performance, and both 4x800m relay teams top the state rankings with clockings of 9:40.27 and 8:06.43.

Sabrina Silva of Mahar Regional won the discus and set a school record in the shot put (36'5.5") in their win against Pioneer Valley.

Nick Magalhaes of Gardner tied Kelly Edward's 1990 school record in the 110 hurdles of 14.9 in their dual meet against Narragansett.  Magalheas also won the 400m hurdles and the javelin in that meet.

Donovan Henry (Catholic Memorial) now has the two fastest 200m times in the state; one hand time and one fully automatic time.  Henry looked impressive as he won the 200m at the MSTCA Invitational in 22.15.

Two hurdlers put the rest of the state on notice.  Vanessa Clerveaux of Brockton and Josh Quinnie of Attleboro dominated their respective races Saturday at the MSTCA Invitational and posted MA#1 times in the process.  Clerveaux won the 100m hurdles in 14.44 and Quinnie won the 110m hurdles in 14.91.

Kyle Quinn of Somerset moved up to US#6 with his 205'2" javelin throw at the MSTCA Invitational on Saturday.  He won the event by almost 25 feet and the house located at the end of the field was in serious jeopardy.  The meet officials didn't want to touch his javelin because he was nearly throwing beyond the end of the sector into a patch of poison ivy just feet away from the residence.  It's not often that you need a 225 foot javelin sector at a high school meet.

Catarina Rocha of Peabody took over the #1 spot in the state with her winning 2 mile time of 10:48.15.  She won the Andover Boosters' meet by almost 50 seconds!

Teammates Shayne Collins and Josh Lampron were thinking outside the box when they decided to forego the MSTCA Invitational and race at the New Balance Twilight Meet.  The strategy paid off as Collins ran a US#6 time of 14:39.83 in the 5000m and Lampron ran a US#4 time of 3:50.03 in the 1500m.  Just for perspective, Lampron's time converts to 4:08.36 for a full mile.

Other Massachusetts prep stars competing at the New Balance Twilight meet were Marissa Shoji (Noble) who ran a US#4 time of 16:59.07 in the 5000m and Annika Gompers (Gann) who ran a US#21 time of 4:41.07 in the 1500m.  Gomper's time converts to 5:03.47 for a full mile.
