Johnny Abraham

There were no surprises in the lead pack of the Div. 1 race with the Newton North duo of Gabe Montague and Mike Schlicting up front with Lowell's Johnny Abraham. The race became a three-runner affair shortly after the halfway point and it was Schlicting who struck first with a half mile to go. The Tiger surged into the lead and held off the hard-finishing Abraham for the 15:29.9 win. Abraham was three seconds back in 15:32.4 and Montague finished strong in 15:40.8.  

“I tried to hold back for the first half of the race, and I felt fairly comfortable,” Abraham said. “I was hurting during the last half-mile, but then I found a little left in me in the last 400 meters or so.”

Shepherd Hill Senior Stella Worters won the varsity race at the Amherst Invitational. Worthers, a senior, won with a time of 18:47 over Carmon Bango of Woodstock Union in Vermont. Stella Worthers was the runnerup in the 2012 race. In the team competition, Pomperaug High School (133 points) of Connecticut edged out Weymouth High School  (140 Points). Shepherd Hill Senior Stella Worters won the varsity race at the Amherst Invitational. Every runner at Lowell is a cog in the machine.  But that’s not said in a negative way.  Rather, every runner in the Lowell program is an integral part of the running powerhouse that seems to top the state rankings year after year.  The cogs work in unison, and when firing on all cylinders, they execute race tactics with machine like efficiency.

Many of the athletes we will see this season did not even race on the varsity level last year, and the coaches that demonstrate the patience to employ a long-term plan will most likely hoist a championship trophy in November. (Photo by Henry Finch)

Lipman, Gompers, and Scott are three of the state's best....... regardless of age.

The Lincoln-Sudbury girls posted a US#8 time of 9:01.78 and the Wachusett boys posted a US#5 time of 7:36.37 in their respective 4x800m relays.

The beginning of the outdoor season signals the end of the indoor season.  Over the next few days, MileSplitMass will take a look at the top performers from each class and highlight some of the outstanding performances of the indoor season.
