NB Indoor Nationals - Mansfield SMR and Carla Forbes are National Champions

Massachusetts Highlights

Can lightning strike twice?  It most certainly can, but it's not likely.  An athlete can post season best performances on consecutive weeks, but with each stellar performance the odds of being able to reproduce it diminish.  In Massachusetts, if an athlete competes in all the postseason championships, lightning needs to strike five times in a row. Possible?  Sure, but highly unlikely.  It's not a question of effort or heart; it's a question of physiology.

Credit goes out to the Newton North and Mansfield coaches who not only understand this principal, but they brilliantly use it to manage the postseason.  The chess match we witnessed at the state championships extended to the rest of the nation as they strategically placed their superstars in events over the past month.  Elite level athletes believe they can win everything.  It's a character trait they must possess to be successful.  It's the coach’s job to convince the athlete it may not be in their best interests to win everything, because consecutive weeks of all-out efforts may negatively impact their big-picture goals. This is certainly a difficult task to accomplish among highly competitive people.

Both teams masterfully merged the goals of the program with the needs of the individual by strategically placing their elite level athletes in the very delicate position of being an individual champion and a good teammate.  The end product was two national championships from Massachusetts and plenty of team accolades along the way.

Great things are expected from Carla Forbes every time she steps on the track; and she usually delivers.  Forbes spent the last month helping her team win championships by scoring points each week in the maximum number of events allowed by the MIAA.  Once the team scoring was finished, she stepped away from the long jump at the New England Championships and shifted her focus to the national championships.  Tough training cycles and consecutive weeks of competition had taken a toll on Forbes, and she had not posted a mark over 19 feet since the MSTCA Invitational back in January.  To her credit, she didn't have to, as she continued to win every long jump competition along the way.  But, a perfectly timed peak-cycle and opting-out of the long jump at the New England Championships would do wonders for Forbes, as she returned to the runway on Saturday at the New Balance National Championships to win the event in 19'5.5”.  Awards video.

Forbes' successful strategy was not an anomaly and Newton North employed a similar tactic with their boys’ team.  After a fantastic start to the meet on Friday where Isaiah Penn won the Emerging Elites 400 Meter Run in 49.62 (race video), Newton North pulled out of the 4x200 Meter Relay on Saturday morning and shifted their focus to the Sprint Medley Relay later that day.  Although we will never truly know the answer, that decision may have bought just enough extra recovery time to propel the team of Ryan Lucken, Ben Clark, Isaiah Penn, and Ezra Lichtman to a podium spot with a 6th place finish and a MA#2 time of 3:32.46. Race Video.

As for Mansfield, it was a long road to several team titles over the past month and they had some tough decisions to make as they entered the New England Championships.  Because their team success was so heavily rooted in the long relays, they would need to find creative ways to keep their sprinters sharp, yet rest their distance runners.  They did so by shuffling their relay line-ups at the New England Championships and removing Josh Lampron and Shayne Collins from their primary individual events.  With all the puzzle pieces back in place this weekend, they would experience unprecedented success at the New Balance Indoor National Championships.

Mansfield won the boys 1600m Sprint Medley after impressive relay legs by Nick King, Steve Gannon, and Griffin Robertson put Josh Lampron within striking distance of the leaders.  The group finished with a US#1 time of 3:28.99 after Lampron successfully challenged 600 Meter national leader Strymar Livingston with 300 meters to go in the 800 meter anchor leg.  Lampron made a strong move on the back stretch of the final lap and put a 5 meter gap on Livingston.  He then showed tremendous acceleration out of the final corner to hold on for the win and a 1:52.xx split.  Livingston and his Christopher Columbus (NY) teammates held the US#1 time of 3:32.25 entering the race, and the top five finishers from Saturday are now US #1-5! The Mansfield 4x400 Meter Relay team of Griffin Robertson, Nick King, Ryan Petrella, and Steve Gannon  would pick-up another team point on Sunday by finishing 8th overall with a MA#2 time of 3:22.11 (race video).  Then, Shayne Collins would weather the national record pace set by Lukas Verzbikas in the 2 Mile to finish 3rd in 9:11.12; adding another 6 points to their team total.  As a fitting end to the weekend, Josh Lampron would return on Sunday afternoon to win heat #5 of the 800 Meter Run with a great finishing kick in the last 50 meters.  His 7th place overall finish (1:53.13) earned two additional team points and propelled Mansfield into 4th place in the team competition; only two points behind 3rd place Lightning Fast of Deleware.  Race video.

Additional Highlights

Day 3

Kendal Knous (Franklin) ran the fastest 800m time in New England (2:12.94)  to finish 10th in the Championship Division.

Andrea Keklak (Lincoln-Sudbury) would finish 2nd (4:49.93)  in heat #2 of the mile finals, but would end-up 3rd overall after Hana Meier (Grosse Pointe Farms) won the event from the first section (4:48.50).  A pack of six girls, including Keklak and Kathy O'Keefe (Newton South), would break away from the rest of the field after posting splits of 69.4 and 2:25.6.  O'Keefe would try to join Keklak at 1200 meters with a big move from the back of the pack, but the group surged in the corner and she would be pushed back to her original position.  Both Keklak and O'Keefe made strong moves exiting the final corner; Keklak would almost win the section and O'keefe finished 9th overall in 4:52.68. Race video.

In the finals of the 400 Meter Run, Rebecca Robinson would once again find herself in lane #6 with Dynasty McGee to her left in lane #5.  This time McGee would be joined by Kendall Baisden (Detroit, MI) and the pair would open a 5 meter gap on Robinson after 200 meters.  But, just like the semi-finals, Robinson would show tremendous strength at the 300 meter mark and close that gap. She would eventually finish in 4th with a time of 55.24. Race video.

In an odd twist of events, John Murray (Shrewsbury) would stop a lap early in the 2 mile and trigger the finish line camera as there was confustion at the finish line with Lukas Verzbicas and Edward Cheserek lapping the field.  Murray would quickly get back on the track and finish in 7th at 9:16.17.  Shayne Collins (Mansfield) was the top Massachusetts finisher in 3rd place with a time of 9:11.12, followed by  David Melly (Newton South) in 22nd overall with a time of 9:39.77.  The 6 points Collins earned for 3rd place helped keep Mansfield in the top 5 of the team competition after 15 events. Rebecca Robinson (Arlington) would unfortunately draw lane #6 in the final heat of the 400 Meter prelims with Dynasty McGee (US#8 at 400m) to her left in lane #5.  Robinson could not see the rest of the field and McGee took advantage.  McGee effortlessly made-up the stagger in the first 200m and entered the  final backstretch with a 7 meter lead. But, Robinson would show tremendous strength as she closed the gap exiting the final corner and then slipped into lane two in the home stretch to almost catch McGee at the line.  McGee would finish as the fastest qualifier in 55.13 and Robinson would qualify in second at 55.29.  The two should be side-by-side again tomorrow in the finals.
