Freshmen Top 10
If the freshman class is any indication, the future of Massachusetts track and field is in good shape. Dozens of 9th graders posted MileSplitMass Elite times, and a few even cracked the overall state top 10. Distance standouts Alexia Lipman and Annika Gompers proved to be two of the state's best regardless of age. Lipman finished the season ranked #4 in the state at 800m with a time of 2:15.13, and Gompers is MA#10 in the Mile at 5:07.39 and MA#2 in the 2 Mile at 10:42.48.
Holly Sullivan of Ipswich is shaping-up to be the next elite heptathlete in the state. She currently has the top mark in the freshman class for the long jump (17'10") and the triple jump (35'10"). In addition, Sullivan is also ranked 3rd in the 200m (25.84), 2nd in the 400m (58.13), and 10th in the 800m (2:24.90).
As for the boys, Nick Scott made a strong argument for his bid to be the best all-around athlete in the group. Scott leads three events, and is MA#4 in the high jump at 6'6". In addition, an impressive group of young distance runners appear to be on the verge of some very fast times. Andrew Doherty and Christian Stafford both posted sub 4:30 times in the Freshman Mile at the New Balance Outdoor National Championships and Johnny Abraham was not far behind at 4:36.05. Abraham also leads the 2 Mile at 9:57.15.
