Freshman Phenoms
The beginning of the outdoor season signals the end of the indoor season; although the two seem to overlap in a never-ending training cycle. Over the next few days, MileSplitMass will take a look at the top performers from each class and highlight some of the outstanding performances of the indoor season.
Colleen Sands of Wachusett finished 11th at the State Cross Country Championships and her stellar performances on the oval did not come as a surprise to most. Although many expected her to content for a top spot in the Mile and 2 mile, most of her competitors were caught off-guard by how poised and confident she was on the track. Sands ended the season leading her fellow classmates in the Mile (5:06.29) and the 2 Mile (11:11.28).
Annika Gompers of Gann Academy was a surprise to many as she spent the majority of the season racing in open competitions around the state because her school does not currently have a track team. She emerged on the state rankings at the New Balance Indoor Nationals after running a tremendous double of 5:08.88 in the Mile and 11:20.30 in the 2 Mile.
William Biggs of Boston College High School burst onto the scene at the Auerbach Freshman-Sophomore Invitational, wining both prelim heats of the 55 Meter Dash and finishing second overall in 6.78. His performance this season was only topped by Adam Couitt of Somersett who jumped 6’4” to win the Eastern Athletic League and finished 7th at the All-State Meet.
