The two best runners in the state of Massachusetts are the Marathon Sports  "Athlete's of the Week". Ater they enjoy their Thanksgiving holiday they will be packing their bags for the biggest race of the season, the Northeast Footlocker Cross-Country Championships on Van Cortlandt Park in New York.

The Junior from Newton South had a breakthrough race Saturday winning the Division I Junior/Senior Division of the MSTCA Coaches Invitational. Shiu ran a personal best time of 16:22, finishing twenty seconds ahead of his cross town rival Mike Schlichting from Newton North. Earlier in the season Shiu finished 10th at the Ocean State Invitational,  and 4th place at both the Wachusett Invitational and the Dual County League Championships.

Nick Carleo is slowly becoming a force in Massachusetts, and he still only a sophomore. He has victories in both the Frank Kelley and the Bay State Invitational.  As impressive as those victories were, Carleo looks like he is running just fast enough to win.  He will certainly be pushed in the week ahead. He will certainly be pushed in the week ahead. Julie McConville made a very loud statement at the MSTCA Twilight Invitational by winning by over half a minute (17:30) over her next competitor. It was her first major race of the season, and it certainly puts her as one of the favorites to win on the mountain in November.  With the Twilight meet performance and her 10:36 Two Mile time on her resume, McConville will start to receive some well deserved national recognition.

This weeks Marathon Sports Athlete of the Week is awarded to Nolan Parsley of Weymouth High School.  Nolan won the MSTCA Twilight Invitational Division I race.  In the closest battle of the evening, his time of 15:49 edged out Owen Gosner of King Phillip by 1 second. A few weeks earlier, Parsley finished fourth place at the Frank Kelley Invitational (16:07).  He will certainly be one of the favorites for the MIAA Division I  Championships in November. He has a personal best times of 9:26 ( 2 mile) and 4:25 (1 Mile).

The Senior from Ipswich ran a personal best 5k time at the Frank Kelley Invitational. The defending Division VI State Champion was second to Liz Holmes, but had the fourth fastest time of the day behind Rocha, Davis, and Holmes. She is coming off a strong spring season running great times in both the Mile Run (5:08), and 2 Mile Run (11:27). She will be one of the contenders in the Division 2 All State Finals where she finished 7th place in 2011.

This week's Marathon Sports Athlete of the week is awarded Peter Hale from Swampscott High School. Peter had quite the week as he finished 2ND in the Frank Kelley Invitational, and turned around the following weekend and finished an amazing 3rd place at the vey tough Thetford Woods Trail run in Vermont. He had the third fastest time of the day at Wrentham. In 2011, Hale placed second at the Eastern Mass meet, and 10th at the All State Finals. He also had a personal best of 9:25 for the 2 mile run.

The Senior from Acton-Boxborough High School may have stepped it up a notch in 2012. She ran a personal best time of 18:35 last week at the Frank Kelley Invitational, second to Catarina Rocha. She will be looking to improve on her last years sixth place finish at the All State Meet.

In the sport of Cross-Country, the only way to knock off close to minute on your 5k time is to have a great summer of training. This had to be the case for Brian Amaral from Tewksbury High School, who last week ran 16:02 on the Wrentham Developmental Course. Brian's second place finish solidifies him as one of the top runners in the state. Last year Brian started to show signs of his potential as he ran 9:36 for the two mile run.  He had a personal best of 16:58 prior to this season. Brian Amaral is the weeks Marathon Sports Athlete of the week.

Marathon Sport Presents: X-C Athlete of the Week 9/22/12 Sep 22, 2012

The male athlete of the week is awarded to Methuen's Mike O'Donnell. Mike finished second place at the Nashua Invitational last weekend with a nice early season time of 16:03. The week before he cruised through a 9:46  two mile relay leg at the Clipper Relays in Newburyport. He is the #3 returning runner from last years All State Meet, and could possibly make a run at the title. He ran an amazing 4:15 mile as a Junior.

It's very early in the season but Milesplitmass will begin the process of picking the Marathon Sports Athlete of the Week. This week male winer will go to New Bedford Senior Paolo Tavares. Tavares ran away with the Martha's Vineyard Inivtational with a nice early season time of 16:07 on the Vineyard 5k course. As a Junior, Tavares ran a respectable 9:37 for 2 Miles and without a doubt he is headed well south of the 16:00 Minute barrier.
