We will run two segments today for the Athlete's of the Week. The first segment is something very special, for the first time we have a pair of Freshman winning the award.
Sam Stubbs 9th Grade Cambridge Ringe & Latin
Sam Stubbs, the Freshman from Cambridge Ringe and Latin, won the Division 2 Eastern Massachusetts State Championship. If my research is correct, he is the only freshman to win an Eastern Divisional Championships in the history of Massachusetts Cross-Country. That's a pretty amazing accomplishment, although not officially confirmed with the stat guru's as of yet. Other Freshman superstars like Alberto Salazar and Bobby Goss fell short, but we think Sam Stubbs may now own that title. His 15:59 effort gave him the 14th fastest time of the day.
Margie Cullen 9th Grade Needham High School
Another Freshman winning a State Title? Although not as rare as on the Boys side , it's still an amazing accomplishment. Margie Cullen, of Needham, won the Division 2 Eastern Massachusetts State Championship with a time of 18:53. Earlier in the season she was 3rd place at the Twilight Meet, and then came on strong to win the Bay State League Championship Meet. Her time Saturday was the 12th fastest of the day.
