The Buffalo Bills made 4 straight Super Bowls in the 1990's, meaning, to even the casual NFL observer, that they won four straight AFC titles. But, when quarterback Jim Kelly or coach Marv Levy are asked about those years, the AFC titles are never mentioned, giving way to talk of what never happened, a Super Bowl victory. Now, Phil Maia and Scott Ouellet, the MA #1 Lowell Red Raiders coaching tandem that took the runner up trophy the past two years, as well as a 4th place in 2009 with a team good enough to win, have avoided the fate of those Bills. They will forever remember the first All State title, one that everyone seemed to know was coming, but Ouellet and Maia knew better than to take for granted.
The Superman of Central Mass. cross-country was at his best again yesterday in the Division 1 state championship meet at hilly Northfield Mountain as he conquered the terrain in a runaway course- and All-State-record time of 15:29.7. He obliterated the record of Mansfield’s Ryan Collins, who ran a 15:49 in 2006. “Training has led up to doing well, for sure,” said Green, who finished the 3.1-mile course in 15:52 just four weeks ago at the Bay State Invitational. “I didn’t know the time I was going to throw down today was going to be that fast.” “I think he used that last week at districts and this week here to make a claim as the best cross-country runner, at least this year, in Massachusetts,” longtime St. John’s coach Raul Laborde said.
NORTHFIELD -- Coming into the biggest race of the season, the Lowell High boys cross country team knew the only way it was going to achieve a peak performance was to run up the mountain faster than everybody else. The Red Raiders captured their first-ever MIAA Division 1 Cross-Country Meet team championship at the Northfield Mountain course by finishing with a total of 96 points. Westfield was second at 149, followed by Shrewsbury (175), St. John's Prep (188) and Wachusett (201). Chelmsford was eighth in the team standings at 219. The victory was especially sweet for Lowell since it had finished second in the team standings at the Div. 1 All-State Meet the two previous seasons. Patrick Coppinger (13, 16:30.70), Mike Kalenoski (22, 16:42.67), Nick McArdle (23, 16:43.61), John Abraham (28, 16:49.07), Randy Nong (35, 16:57.20) and Andrew Whitney (54, 17:09.97) led the way for the Raiders.
NORTHFIELD — Bishop Feehan coach Bob L’Homme reached over the temporary orange plastic fencing to congratulate his girls. He told them he thought they won the team title in Saturday’s MIAA state championship. “A reporter wouldn’t be walking toward us if she didn’t have good news,” he said while gathered with runners and parents. Led by junior Abbey McNulty’s victory in 18 minutes and 20.72 seconds, Bishop Feehan won its fourth consecutive state title in Division 2. Next year the school will move to Division 1. “I thought this was going to be a bit of a rebuilding year because it’s all underclassmen, there’s only one senior,” L’Homme said. “As the year built up, they really showed some signs of improvement and they really came together. It was just awesome.”
Given the eye test, Jonathan Green of St. John’s of Shrewsbury was the overwhelming favorite to capture the Div. 1 race at Saturday’s All-State Championships and defend his title from last fall.
Abbey McNulty and Bedford’s Erin Dietz went back and forth in the lead in the Div. 2 race after the Bishop Feehan star surged away from the cluster of runners at the top of the hill. A 5:10 miler, McNulty doesn’t have a blazing kick, but she can finish hard and that’s just what she did in pulling away for the win in 18:20.72. The rookie Dietz was second in 18:31.65 and Kerri Keohane of Tyngsboro took third in 19:56.03. Third a year ago as a sophomore, McNulty will be looking to defend her title next fall in Gardner when the state meet shifts to Central Mass. McNulty was finally able to break Dietz with 800 meters remaining and never let up until she crossed the finish line. “I went out in the lead pack and when I got to the top of the hill I knew I had to push,” said McNulty. “She was with me the whole way. It was back and forth. I was pushing myself the whole way. That’s the whole point of racing. You know that you fought your hardest. “I poured it on in the last straightaway. I couldn’t go any faster.”
NORTHFIELD — For the past three years, the Lowell boys’ cross-country team had come agonizingly close to winning the Division 1 state title. After a fourth-place finish in 2009, the Red Raiders were runners-up to Brookline the next two seasons. “We’ve been knocking on the door,” said coach Phil Maia. “It was nice that someone opened the door for us.” With five runners in the top 35, Lowell claimed its first state title Saturday at the MIAA all-state meet at Northfield Mountain. The Red Raiders’ score of 96 topped Westfield (149) and Shrewsbury (175)
