NORTHFIELD -- Coming into the biggest race of the season, the Lowell High boys cross country team knew the only way it was going to achieve a peak performance was to run up the mountain faster than everybody else. The Red Raiders captured their first-ever MIAA Division 1 Cross-Country Meet team championship at the Northfield Mountain course by finishing with a total of 96 points. Westfield was second at 149, followed by Shrewsbury (175), St. John's Prep (188) and Wachusett (201). Chelmsford was eighth in the team standings at 219. The victory was especially sweet for Lowell since it had finished second in the team standings at the Div. 1 All-State Meet the two previous seasons. Patrick Coppinger (13, 16:30.70), Mike Kalenoski (22, 16:42.67), Nick McArdle (23, 16:43.61), John Abraham (28, 16:49.07), Randy Nong (35, 16:57.20) and Andrew Whitney (54, 17:09.97) led the way for the Raiders.
