PVIAC Championships

Highlights  

  • Fast times were the order of the day as the PVIAC Championships were moved to Stanley Park because of last week's storm.  Mark Hegarty led a pack of 9 runners that all dipped under 16 minutes on the 5,000 meter course.  Heagarty won the race in 15:33 with a comfortable seven second cushion, but the next seven seconds would produce four runners that crossed the line.  Blake Croteau of Westfield finished in second (15:40);  followed by Cody Hodgins of Holyoke (15:43), Sam Coates-Finke of Northampton (15:44), and Dylan Wright of Amherst (15:47).
  •  Amherst took the team title by placing all five scoring runners in the top 20.  The Hurricanes combined for 54 total points and a 43 second gap in a field of 265 runners.  Holyoke finished second with 89 points and Northampton was third with 90 points.  
  • The Varsity Girls race was just as fast, with five girls running finishing in under 19 minutes, and Camille Blackman of Longmeadow almost breaking the 18 minute barrier.  Blackman ran away with the race, finishing in 18:02.  She was followed by Madison Granger of Belchertown in 18:16, and Amherst teammates Audrey Gould (18:23) and Mel Devoney (18:38).  Natalie Mako of Frontier finished in 18:42 to round-out the top five.
  • Amherst also won this team title, after placing three runners in the top 10.  Their 62 total points put them ahead of Longmeadow by 14 points and ahead of Mohawk by 97 points.  The Amherst gap was fairly large (almost 2 minutes) due to the stellar performances of Gould and Devoney in the front pack, but the team still managed to put all five scoring runners in the top 28, among a field that contained 251 runners.

State Voc. School Championships

Highlights  

  • Greater New Bedford took six of the top nine spots to post a decisive win with 27 points.  Teammates Taylor Days-Merrill and Michael Vaz broke-away from the field to finish first and second in 16:54 and 16:58, respectively.  Matt Moussamih of Diman was third (17:14), Jake MacVarish of Norfolk Aggie was fourth (17:28), and Tevin Cintron was fifth (17:41).  GNB went 1-2-7-8-9 with a 62 second gap and 17:31 average on the 5,000 meter course at Borderland State Park.  Greater Lowell was second in the team competition with 93 points, and Shawsheen Tech was third with 104 points.
  • Sophomore Jennifer Morin of Blackstone Valley scorched the field by over a minute to win the individual crown in 20:16.  Sarah Ketchum of Norfolk Aggie was second (21:37), and Jessica Maloney of Blackstone Valley was third (21:58).  Norfolk Aggie would receive another top ten performance from Julia Schnabel who finished ninth in 23:01, and would eventually edge Blackstone valley 57 to 60.  Shawsheen Tech was third (100 points), and Bristol Aggie was fourth (118 points).

 

 

Tri-Valley League Championships

Highlights  

  • Lee Milne of Dover Sherborn successfully completed the tree-peat by winning the 5,000 meter race at McCarthy Park in 19:42.  The D-S girls were without #3 runner Julia Pearson due to an injury, but still managed to put together a small enough gap with their #4 and #5 runners to edge Medfield 51 to 57.  Hopkinton finished third with 78 points, and Westwood was fourth with 84 points.
  • Freshman Shelby Aarden of Hopkinton was the only other runner to finish under 20 minutes.  Aarden was second in 19:59; followed by Olivia Cannon of Dover-Sherborn (20:30), Nora Smith of Westwood (20:44), and the Medfield trio of Taylor Worthy (20:57), Sally Todd (21:00), and Ashley Campisano (21:03).
  • Bobby McLaughlin of Westwood and Jack Moses of Medfield broke away from the field, but it was McLaughlin who would get the win in 16:54.  Moses finished second in 17:07, and was followed by Luke Devin of Westwood (17:24), and Pat Levenson of Hopkinton (17:30).
  • The team battle was also a good one, with Westwood placing all five scoring runners in the top eleven to edge Medfield 31 to 37.  Hopkinton was third with 68 points, and Dover-Sherborn was fourth with 177 points.

 

 

Big 3 League Championships

  • Paolo Tavares of New Bedford continued his record breaking season by capturing the league title and the Brooklawn Park course record in 15:57.  Tavares sat with the pack a little longer than he is accustomed to, but then broke away for a decisive win.  The Brockton boys also captured the team title with 32 points.  New Bedford was second with 38 points, and Durfee was third with 59 points.

 

 

Middlesex League Championships

Highlights 

  • Stephen Robertson of Wakefield and Nat Adams of Lexington were locked in a great battle up-front as the team battle raged behind them.  Robertson would get the win in 12:08 on the 2.5 mile course, with Adams finishing second in 12:21.  The race for the team championship was even closer as Wakefield edged Lexington 73 to 76; demonstrating the parity and depth of the league.  Wakefield received big performances from sophomore Aaron Lucci who finished 5th in 12:50, and senior James Bridges who was 14th (13:21).  Freshman Daniel Alessandro was Lexington's #2 runner, finishing 11th overall in 13:20. Quentin Stipp of Arlington (12:44), and Paul Green of Belmont (12:45) finished third and fourth, respectively, to round-out the top five.
  •  The Lexington girls trio of Sarah Foster (15:41), Saaya Maeda (15:41), and Grace Vogelzang (15:50) went 1-2-3 to help their team to a 36 point win.  Reading (92 points) would finish second, but not without a fight.  Belmont pushed Reading to the bitter end but eventually ended-up thrid with 99 points.  Eighth grader Callie O'Connell of Wilminton finished fourth (15:52), and senior Rebecca Harris of Belmont was fifth (15:59) in the individual standings. 

 

 

South Shore League Championships

Highlights 


  • Tanner Picklus took his league unbeaten streak and extended it to the South Shore League Championships.  Picklus covered the 2.6 miles course at Strawberry Valley Country Club in 13:59; just over 20 seconds ahead of teammate Brendan Gareri in second place (14:20).  Teammates Tom Vafiadesa (14:37) and Owen Wiggins (14:47) finished thir and fourth, respectively, to help propel Norwell (41 points) to a three point victory over second place East Bridgewater (44 points).  Abington finished third (76 points), and Harwich was fourth (85 points).
  • Jennifer Asci of Rockland and Alicia Cutter of East Bridgewater ran away from the field and were the only two to clock-in under 17 minutes.  Asci got the win in 16:44, followed by Cutter in second (16:59), and Lauren Humphreys of Norwell in third (17:23).  But the team battle was brewing behind the lead duo as two large packs began to form.  Norwell would eventually take spots 6-10 with a minuscule 11 second gap to secure the 13 point win over East Bridgewater (29 to 42).  Carver finished third with 83 points, and Rockland was fourth with 111 points.  

 

 

Old Colony League Championships

Highlights 


  • The Taunton boys went 1-2-3-4-7 to clinch the team title with 17 points.  Jason Henrich led the Tigers, winning the 5,000 meter race in 17:01.  His time was 22 seconds ahead of teammate Damian Collins (17:23), and just missed the course record of 16:55 set by Paolo Tavares of New Bedford earlier this season.  Jake Rogers (17:29.1), Colby Correira (17:29.7), and Luke Vecente (17:35) rounded out the top five.  Dartmouth finished second in the team competition with 62 points, and Bridgewater-Raynham was third with 75 points.
  • The Taunton girls also won in impressive fashion, but after sweeping the top three spots, they were challenged in the pack.  Dominique Mendes won the event for the Tigers in 21:40 and was followed by teammates Tyla DaPonte (21:52.3), and Jackie Bornemann (21:52.5). Bridgewater-Raynham then put three runners across the line in the next 16 seconds and the race for second place was on.  Bridgewater-Raynham would finish tied with Dartmouth at 51 points, but B-R would get the runner-up honors based on the 6th runner tie-breaking performance of Renee Beneski.  Beneski finished 20th overall in 23:44; just four spots ahead of Dartmouth's 6th girl. 

 

 

Bay State League Championships

  • Results  - There was an error in the original boys varsity results that were initially released by the meet management.  An updated set of results were released on Wednesday and the meet page has been updated.  

 

Highlights 


  • Chernet Sisay of Brookline and Zach Ganshirt of Walpole separated from the pack to finish 1-2.  Sisay covered the 5000 meter course at Norwood in 15:59, while Ganshirt was not far behind in 16:03.  Mark Perry (16:17), Ben Groleau (16:21), and Justin Keefe (16:22) provided a fantastic battle for third place to round-out the top five. 
  • MA#1 Brookline is starting to reveal their post-season form, winning this very competitive league with 31 points.  The warriors place all five scoring runners in the top ten, and managed to post a 48 second gap even with the strong performance of Sisay up front.  Wellesley was second, but they needed a 6th man tie breaker to jump ahead of Walpole.  The two were tied at 99 points, until Henning Muller-Fahlbusch crossed the line in 48th (18:11).  Muller-Fahlbusch was just two scoring spots ahead of Walpole's 6th man and sealed the win by a mere 8 seconds.
  • Priyanka Fouda of Wellesley ran to an impressive 32 second win in the girls 5K.  Fouda finished in 19:10 and was followed by Weymouth teammates Ashley Betts (19:42) and Julie Tevenan (19:46).  Irene Golden of Newton North was fourth (19:47), and Caroline Turner of Needham was fifth (19:54).
  • MA#2 Weymouth scored a decisive win over two ranked teams; amassing just 41 points in the process. MA#11 Needham was second (84 points), Brookline was thrid (91 points), and MA#18 Wellesley was fourth (92 points).  Weymouth was very strong up front, placing their top four in the top eight places in the race.  Needham and Brookline did most of their damage in the pack, with Brookline picking-up third place without a runner in the top ten.

 

 

 

Northeastern Conference Championships

Highlights 

  • Catarina Rocha blew-away the field, winning the race by over two minutes!  Rocha covered the Bradley Palmer State Park course in 17:54, averaging 5:56 per mile.  Mary Kauffman of Marblehead was second (19:55), and Peabody teammates Lauren Barrett (20:09) and Sam Allen (20:11) were third and fourth, respectively.

  • The Peabody girls won the team title by putting all five scoring runners in the top eleven for a total of 28 points.  Marblehead was second with 64 points, and Beverly was third with 78 points.  

  • Nick Christensen of Peabody also ran away with the individual championship; finishing over 30 seconds ahead of Peter Hale of Swampscott in 15:50.  Hale would clock in at 16:23, followed by T.J. D'Amato of Peabody (16:33), and Michael Fitzpatrick of Revere (16:34). 

  • Christensen and D'Amato would lead Peabody to the team title with 44 points, but the battle for second place was close.  Swampscott just edged Marblehead 66 to 67 to earn the runner-up spot. Gloucester was fourth with 90 points, and Danvers was fifth with 153 points.

 

 

MVC League Championships

Highlights 


  • The Lowell boys won the team title by going 3-5-6-7-8 for 29 points.  Patrick Coppinger (16:28), Nathaniel McCarthy (16:38), Alex Andujar (16:42), Mike Kalenoski (16:44), and Nick McArdle (16:47) combined for a 19 second gap and a 42 point win over second place Chemlsford (71 points).  Andover finished third (88 points), and Central Catholic was fourth (128 points).

  • Mike O'Donell of Methuen won the individual title, holding off Ryan Cooney of Andover to win the race in 16:09.  Cooney finished second in 16:16, Coppinger was third (16:28), and Robert Massey of Chelmsford was fourth (16:32).

  • Maggie Mullins of Andover added another championship to her resume.  She won the event in 18:47, followed by Jaclyn Solimine of Haverhill (19:14) and Grace Ndungu of Lowell (19:16).  Ali Wood of Chelmsford (19:23), and Marwah Haq of Methuen (19:31) rounded-out the top five.

  • MA#7 Chelmsford beat MA#3 Haverhill by just three points to win the team title.  As is the usual case with evenly matched teams, the race came down to the fifth runner and Casey Taylor of Chelmsford delivered.  Taylor finished 17th in 20:32 to pick-up the last few points needed to secure the win.  Lowell finished third with 77 points, and Andover was fourth with 88 points.

 

 

Cape Ann League Championships

Highlights 


  • Alex Sullivan of North Andover held-off a pack of three Newburyport runners to earn the individual title.  Sullivan finished the 5,000 meter course at Bradley Palmer State Park in 16:23, but the pack of Keith Conway (16:38), Chris Surpin (16:41), and Nicholas Carleo (16:41) finished 2-3-4 to seize control of the team battle.  Newburyport finished with 27 points and a 40 second gap.  Masconomet was second with 53 points, and North Andover was third with 70 points.  

  • Kerri Phelan, Mackenzie Shelgren, and Sarah Keiran put on quite a race as all three ran under 19 minutes.  Phelan got the win in 18:46, with Shelgren (18:52), and Keiran (18:54) not far behind.  Rebecca Morse of Pentucket finished fourth (19:07), and Emily Weigand of Hamilton-Wenham was fifth (19:29).

  • The Hamilton-Wenham girls won another CAL Championship going 1-5-7-10-11 with a gap that was a little over a minute do to Phelan's stellar performance.  The Generals finished with 34 points; 42 points ahea of second place Masconomet.  Pentucket was third with 97 points, and Newburyport was fourth with 123 points. 

 

 

Greater Boston League

Highlights 


  • Yousuf Mohamed of Malden led his team to a 10 point win over Cambidge Saturday at Fresh Pond.  Mohamed was the overall winner in 16:22 for the 2.9 mile course and his teammates went 3-7-8-10 for 29 total points.  Will Suslovic of Cambridge was second (16:29), and Berhanu Tsige of Malden was third (16:49).

  • Emma Payne (19:11) and Noa Randall (20:21) of Cambridge went 1-3, respectively, but it was not enough to overcome the depth of Malden for the team title.  Malden went 2-4-5-8-12 to finish with 30 points and a 15 point win over Cambridge.  Haley Dowdie of Malden finished second overall in 19:41, and was followed by teammates Lauren Benoit (20:33), and Hailey DeFillipis (20:46). 

 

 

South Coast Conference Championships

Highlights 


  • Taylor Days-Merrill of Greater New Bedford gets the win in 16:16.  Mike Wymann of Old Rochester is second (16:22), Tyler Enos of Dighton-Rehoboth is third (16:28), Michael Vas of Greater New Bedford is fourth (16:33), and Nick Pacheco of Old Rochester is fifth (16:39).

  • Greater New Bedford earns a six point win over Old Rochester; 38 to 44.  Bourne was third (87 points), and Seekonk was fourth (97 points).  The race was tight, but GNB went 1-4-8-9-16 and had Old Rochester beat by a couple of places with each scoring runner.  

  • The Old Rochester trio of Sammy Barrett (21:20), Paige Santos (21:23), and Hannah Vieira (21:31) went 1-2-3, respectively, to lead the Bulldogs to a 61 point win over Bourne.  Liz Tavares of Seekonk finished fourth (21:34), and Jennifer Miranda of Greater New Bedford finished fifth (21:45).

 

 

Eastern Athletic Conference Championships

Highlights


  • The wind and rain started right as the gun went off for the varsity girls race.  The weather and the course simultaneously deteriorated as the varsity races progressed, but regardless of the weather, it was a day to remember for Bishop Feehan as they posted two near perfect scores in both varsity divisions.  

  • Kathleen Powell won the varsity girls race in 19:12 and let the MA#1 Shamrocks to a point total of 18 points.  Abbie McNulty (19:14), Erin Svensen (19:26), Bryanna Harum (20:00), and Kate Svensen (20:07) all finished in the top six places.  The only person to break-up the Bishop Feehan pack was Megan Ritchie who ran a very strong race to finish thrid in 19:22.  Ritchie's Coyle & Cassidy team finished second with 65 points, and Martha's Vineyard was third with 67 points.

  • The boys race was more of the same, with MA#2 Bishop Feehan going 1-6 side-by-side at the finish line.  Their perfect score of 15 was 37 points ahead of second place MA #6 Martha's Vineyard.  Coyle & Cassidy was third with 72 points, and Bishop Stang was fourth with 120 points.

 

 

Atlantic Coast League Championships

Highlights

  • Joel Hubbard and Kevin Thomas of Marshfield went 1-2, but it was the Sandwich pack that wins the performance of the day.  Hubbard won the race in 16:56, followed closely by Thomas at 16:57, but then David Allen (17:19), David Regan (17:24), PD Gannett (17:29), and Henry Daniels-Koch (17:30) took the next four spots.  Add to that Danny Branco in 10th (17:45), and the Blue Knights posted 28 total points..  Marshfield was second with 44 points, and Nauset was third with 115 points.  The final score does not reflect how close the race was, as Marshfield was leading the team competition at the 2 mile mark.  Just like their dual meet a couple of weeks back, Sandwich came fighting back to pull off the win.

  • Jordan O'Dea continued her impressive season by winning the ACL individual title by almost 30 seconds.  O'Dea covered the 5000 meter course at Sandwich High School in 19:16.  Lauren O'Neil of Falmouth was second (19:44), Nicole Borofski of Plymouth North was third (19:56), and Tory Sivco of Sandwich was fourth (20:00).

  • The team title was decided by runners in pairs.  O'Dea ran away from the field to score the first point for D-Y, but then Jessica Currier (20:09) and Mary Stafford (20:49) took 5th and 6th.  The Dolphins put the meet away when Bridget Dunbar (21:43) and Ashlynne Xhiaros (21:58) came in 10th and 11th, respectively.  Marshfield was second with 70 points, and Sandwich was third with 75 points.

 

 

Hockomock League Championships

Highlights


  • A pack of four girls would remain intact until well after the second mile mark when Alex Giese of Franklin took over the race and extended the gap to roughly 10 seconds. Giese would hold on for the win in 19:08, with Sannon Hickey of Oliver Ames finising second (19:15), and Luren Hagen of Franklin finishing third (19:20).  Caroline Sun of Sharon (19:26) and Lizzy Blanchford of North Attleboro (19:37) finished 4th and 5th, respectively, to round out the top five. 

  • The Franklin girls won their third consecutive Hockomock League Title with 38 points; going 1-3-6-10-17.  The front pack combination of Giese and Hagen was impressive, but the difference maker was Emily Stickles who finished 6th in 19:57.  Oliver Ames was second with 48 points, and North Attleboro was third with 97 points.

  • Chris Allen of King Philip took the lead from the gun and never looked back.  Actually, he looked back once to ensure his 40 meter gap was holding against Drew Beck of Oliver Ames.  Allen won the 5,000 meter race in 15:46; followed by Beck (16:03), Brendan Sullivan (16:13), and Andrew Kerester (16:23).

  • Mansfield sat their top runner Josh Lampron, but was still able to pull-off the win with a brilliant display of pack running. The Hornets put a group of four together at the mile mark and demonstrated a true team strategy as they chipped-away at the second half of the course.  They would eventually finish 5-8-9-10-12-15-18 to post 44 point total score and an eight point win over Oliver Ames.  Franklin was third with 127 points, and King Philip was frouth with 130 points.

 

 

Catholic Conference Championships

  • In working with the Boston Parks Department, and the help of Steve Vitonis, the classic Franklin Park course was slightly altered in a couple places to avoid wet spots and greater deterioration of the course.  As a result, times are about 7-10 seconds faster than the normal 5k course.

  •  Xaverian defended their conference title winning the conference meet with 32 points.  BC High, with 4 of the top ten,  finished second with 43 points and ahead of SJP with 68 points. 

  • Dennis Muldoon of Catholic Memorial, in his first season of XC, won the varsity race in 16:34, with BC High's Ian O'Leary in second in 16:42.  Xaverian's freshman Lucas Taxter was 7th overall in the varsity race with a time of 17:02. 

  • SJP won the JV division and BCH won the freshman race. 

 

 

Dual County League Championships

Highlights


  • James Sullivan of Acton-Boxborough won the individual title in 15:41.  Teammate Tim Cox (16:01) had to battle Matthew Herzig (16:04) of Weston and Matthew Barnes of Lincoln-Sudbury (16:08) to capture second place.  

  • The team battle was just as tight as the individual battle as Acton-Boxborough won the event with 45 points; just 3 points ahead of second place Lincoln-Sudbury.  Based on the scoring numbers, the 1-2 finish by Sullivan and Cox made all the difference.  Concord-Carlisle finished third (90 points), and Newton South was fourth (119 points).

  • Olivia Brackett of Weston and Christine Davis of Acton-Boxborough put on a great show as the pair dueled for the top spot.  Brackett earned the win in 18:23, with Davis not far behind in 18:33.  Charlotte Walmsley of Weston was third (18:41), and Anna Rhatigan of Newton South was fourth (18:50).

  • The Weston girls won the team title with 46 points; due in large part to the single digit performances of their top three runners.  Lincoln-Sudbury was second (59 points), and Newton South was third (79 points).

 

 

Mid Wach Division C Championships

Highlights

  • Jay Jewitt of Ayer captured the individual title with a narrow win over Nick Kronauer of Bromfield.  Jewitt covered the 2.7 mile course at Tahanto in 14:24, while Kronauer finished in 14:35, and Bobby DiGioia of Tahanto was third in 14:37. Freshmen Price Day of Bromfield and Joe Capps of Narragansett broke into the top 10, finishing 5th (14:42) and 6th (14:46), respectively.

  • The Bromfield boys earned the team championship with 52 points behind the strong performance of their front pack.  Tahanto was second (98 points), and Tyngsborough was third (101 points).

  • Anna and Renee Capps of Narragansett finished with identical 16:07 times, but the win was given to Anna.  But the battle for second and third was just as good.  Jennifer Markham of Lunenburg finished third, and freshman Kerri Keohane of Tyngsborough was fourth; both with identical 16:17 times.

  • The Narragansett girls made a statement by winning the meet with 39 points; Tyngsboro was second (61 points), and Bromfield was thrid (102 points).  But the real battle was for fourth place.  Gardner, Murdock, and Lunenburg were all separated by just seven points, with fourth place eventually going to Gardner (121 points).

 

 

Colonial Athletic League Championships

Highlights

  • Parker Charter took seven of the top eight spots to nearly post a perfect score; winning the meet with 16 points.  Keith Rossi led the team, finishing first overall with a 15:23 clocking on the 2.8 mile home course.  Teammates Zach Rolfe (15:40), Rocky Ethier (15:50), Andrew Hilton (16:00), Mike Sushchyk (16:11), Joe Gale (16:26), and Ben Grigglestone (16:35) finished 2-3-4-6-7-8, respectively.  Korey Wilson of Monty Tech was the only athlete to break-up the Parker pack, finishing 5th in 16:03.  Monty Tech finished second (71 points), and Assabet was third (107) points.

  • Jen Morin (17:52) and Jessica Maloney (19:07) of Blackstone Valley went 1-2 as their entire scoring five finished in the top nine.  Elizabeth Maloney (19:56), Jocelyn O'Brien (21:10), and Samantha Smith (21:53) finished 4-8-9, respectively, to help Blackstone Valley to a seven point win over Parker.  The race looked like a dual meet as Parker, led by Haley Yarmis in third (19:18), also put all five scoring runners in the top ten.

 

 

Patriot League Championships

Highlights

  • Chelsea Savage of Pembroke won the girls individual title in 18:41, and Whitman-Hanson won the team title by going 2-3-4-6-9-10 for a total of 24 points.  Pembroke was second with 67 points, and Hingham was third with 78 points. Whitman-Hanson put all five scoring runners in the top ten, with the pack of Abby Baker (19:10), Rachel Baker (19:16), and Jenny DiMascio-Donohue (19:20) finishing 2nd through fourth. 

  • Mike McConville of Hingham won the boys 5,000 meter race (15:54), just edging Pat Ryan of Whitman-Hanson for the win (15:59).  Ryan's teammate Nathan Stephansky finished third (16:28), Jason Angell of Duxbury was fourth (16:31), and Pat Cunningham of Pembroke was fifth (16:36).

  • The Whitman-Hanson boys also won the team title by placing all five scoring runners in the top ten.  Dylan Foureau (16:45), Patrick Mulrey (16:46), and Michael Reimer (16:48) finished 7-8-9 respectively, and added to the damage done by Ryan and Stephansky in the front pack.  W-H finished with a team score of 29; Pembroke was second (62), and Hingham was third (76).

 

 

 

Commonwealth Athletic Conference Championships

Highlights

  • Nick Byron of Greater Lowell edged Hansel Santo-Lara of Greater Lawrence by one second to capture the individual title in 18:49 on the 5,000 meter course.  Joseph Arroyo of Chelsea was third (19:09), Brendan Faulkner of Minuteman was fourth (19:12). 

  • The Shawsheen boys pack of Matt Mann (19:20), Dan Boudreau (19:22), Anthony Federico (19:28), Ryan Tirabassi (19:37), and Richard Silk (19:43) finished 5-6-7-9-11, respectively, to post 38 total points, a 23 second 1-5 gap, and a 13 point win.  Greater Lowell was second (51 points), and Chelsea was third (81 points).

  • Fallon Bushee of Mystic Valley held off Maria Splaine and Julia Splaine of PMA for the win in 23:25.  Shwasheen won the girls team title with 50 points; followed by Chelsea (67points), and PMA (69 points).

 

 

Catholic Central League Championships

Highlights

  • Elizabeth McDermot Austin Prep was the only athlete to run under 20 minutes on a very rainy, cold, and muddy day at Franklin Park.  McDermot won the event in 19:54, and was followed by Sarah Saccoach of Archbishop Williams (20:28), Arianna Maida of Bishop Fenwick (20:30), and Maria Schwab of Marian (20:31).

  • Arlington Catholic put all five scoring runners in the top 20 to finish with 50 points and the league championship.  Janelle Solviletti and Kaitlin McCauley were the top finishers for the Cougars at 21:02 (5th) and 21:12 (7th), respectively. Bishop Fenwick was second (62 points), and Cardinal Spellman was thrid (71 points).

  • Matt Norton (17:56) and John Redmond (17:57) of Cardinal Spellman went 1-2 overall to lead their team to a 37 point win.  Brian Sullivan of Archbishop Williams finished third (18:12) to help his team to a thrid place finish, and Chan Yoon of Marian finished fourth (18:17) to help his team to a second place finish.

 

 

Dual Valley Conference Championships

Highlights

  • Roger Thomas of Whitinsville Christian picked-up the individual title and a course record of 17:05, but it was the Hopedale pack of Matt Doran, Paul Maurais, and Christopher Kivior who took over the team battle.  The trio went 3-4-5, respectively, and led Hopedale to 31 total points and their sixth conference title in seven years.  In addition, Hopedale put all seven runners in the top 15.  Whitinsville Christian was second with 50 points, and Blackstone-Millville was third at 100 points.  Ross Mungeam of Douglas finished in second (17:13) to round out the top five.

  • Jessie Cardin of Sutton continued her very impressive season, getting a narrow victory over Julia Berkowicz of Whitinsville Christian.  Cardin set a course record by covering the three mile course at Nimpuc High School in 19:54.  She was followed by Berkowicz (20:09), Corine Bonder (21:05), Mackenzie George (21:12), and Abby Epplett (21:12).

  • Sutton and Whitinsville Christian kept it close though all five scoring runners, but it was Corinne Bonder (3rd) and Mackenzie George (4th) who gave Sutton the four point advantage and the eventual win with 35 points.  Whitinsville Christian finished second with 39 points, and Douglas was third with 69 points.

 

 

Girls Catholic Conference League

Highlights

  • Ursuline Academy (MA#16 Divison 2) edged Notre Dame Academy (MA#15 Divison 1) 26 to 29 to win the League Championship meet.  It was practically a dual meet up front with Ursuline Academy going 1-2-6-7-10 and NDA going 3-4-5-8-9.  NDA was crowned the 2011 CCL Champions based on their regular season record.

  • Norah Griffin of Ursuline Academy won the meet, covering the 5K distance at Cunningham Park in 19:42.  Teammate Meghan Grela was second (19:52), and Notre Dame Academy freshman Elizabeth Constantino was third (19:55.60).

  • League All-Stars:  Elizabeth Constantino (NDA), Sarah Brennan (NDA), Clara King (NDA), Kelsey Whitaker (NDA), Norah Griffin (Ursuline), Meghan Grela (Ursuline), Cayla Kalinowski (Ursuline), Collette O'Connor (Fontbonne), Michelle Hurwitz (Fontbonne), Dominique Davis (Mt. Alvernia).

 

 

 

Mid Wach Division B Championships

Highlights

  • Brendan Robertson of Westborough held off a pack of five runners from Nashoba for the win in 16:39 (5K).  Nashoba teammates Miles Hodge (16:47), Reid Sullivan (17:02), Forrest Hangen (17:25), Hayden Smith (17:40), and Mark Puleo (17:47) would take places 2-6.

  • The Nashoba boys easily won the team title with 20 points over Westborough (51 points), and Quabbin (81 points).  Nashoba took seven of the top twelve spots and had a 1-5 gap of 60 seconds.

  • Abby Hurd of Nashoba blew-out the field by almost a minute en route to a 19:49 winning time.  Freshman Steffany Halfrey of Quabbin was second in 20:45, and Maddie McMullen of Nashoba was third in 21:18.

  • Nashoba put all five scoring runners in the top eight, and all seven team members finished in the top eleven.  They won the event with 25 points but the battle for second place was a good one.  Quabbin finished with 79 points, just one point ahead of Westborough and three points ahead of Groton-Dunstable.

  • Northbridge junior Julie Richer put a 9 second gap on Stella Worters of Shepherd Hill to win the girls' individual title in 18:11 (2.91 miles).   Seventh grader Angie DiDomenica of Milbury finished third in 18:37 and was followed by Shelby Stretton of Oxford (19:22) and Megan Mawn of Northbridge (19:30).

  • Northbridge won the girls team title by putting all five scoring runners in the top 12.  They finished with 34 points; 21 points ahead of second place Shepherd Hill.  Millbury was third (73 points) and Oxford was fourth (110 points).

  • The top five varsity boys were separated by only 13 seconds.  Aaron Anderstrom of Tantasqua got the win in 15:42 (2.91 miles) and was followed closely by Chaz Davis of Grafton who finished second in 15:48.  Elijah Fossas of Shepherd Hill finished third (15:15), and Mike Dobos of Tantasqua just edged Wes Nelson of Shepherd Hill for fourth.  Both runners would finish with identical 15:55 times.

  • Shepherd Hill would take home the boys team title by placing four runners in the top eleven places.  Their total of 44 points was 19 points better than second place Tantasqua.  Auburn finished third (83 points), and Uxbridge was fourth (97 points).

 

 

 

Mayflower League Championships

Highlights

  • Diman senior Matt Moussamih put a six second gap on Jake MacVarish of Norfolk Aggie to take home the conference title in 17:28.  MacVarish finished second in 17:34, and was followed by freshman Adam Petti of West Bridgewater in third (17:43).

  • The West Bridgewater boys edged Diman 57 to 63 to secure the team championship. Tri-County finished third (91 points), and Southeastern Regional was fourth (122 points).

  • Eighth grader Alison Wyman of West Bridgewater ran away with the girls' title; securing a 30 second win.  Wyman covered the 5000 meter course at Borderland State Park in 20:36, and was followed by Sarah Ketchum of Norfolk Aggie (21:06), and Emma Casham  of West Bridgewater (21:08).  Six of the top ten runners were sophomores or younger.

  • West Bridgewater (30 points) went 1-3-5-8-13 for a 29 point win over second place Norfolk Aggie.  Sacred Heart was third (86 points) and Bristol Aggie was fourth (102 points).
