On Saturday afternoon some of the less battle-tested harriers competed in the IC4A Championship for a chance to impress their coach and add excitement for the 2014 season. The UMass squad finished ninth overall in a field of 20 teams in Bronx, N.Y. This year's team was certainly a young group however many of the young runners progressed nicely throughout the 2013 campaign under the training of Coach O'Brien.

The UMass men's cross country team finished 20th overall in a field of 37 teams in Bronx, N.Y. on Saturday afternoon. On Saturday afternoon the Minutemen ran in Madison, Wis. as they competed in one of the nation's most difficult meets of the season. The Wisconsin adidas Invitational included 16 nationally ranked teams and many teams on the cusp of breaking into the top 30 ranked teams in the country. UMass finished 35th overall and ran well together in their final meet prior to the Atlantic 10 Championship. Coach O'Brien's Minutemen found themselves in a course filled with 287 total competitors.

Following Friday's performance at the Coast-To-Coast Battle in Beantown the Atlantic 10 Conference selects freshman Blake Croteau as the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week. Croteau finished 51st out of 140 runners, finishing the 8,000 meter event in 25-minutes, 41-seconds. The Westfield, Mass. native placed third on the team, finishing behind Benjamin Thomas and one of the top runners in the Atlantic 10 a year ago, Antony Taylor.

UMass gained a boost on Friday when their 2012 All-Conference harrier returned to the course. The men's cross country team was seeded eighth overall in the Atlantic 10 Conference by the coaches. The Atlantic 10 is now composed of 13 teams after conference realignment last year. In 2012 the Minutemen finished 12th of 16 teams in the Atlantic 10, however with last year's champion, Butler, and Xavier and Charlotte all leaving the A-10 and George Mason joining the conference, the Minutemen see an opportunity to move up in the standings.

League Best 139 UMass Student-Athletes Named To A-10 Commissioner's Spring Honor Roll Jul 9, 2013

A league-best 139 UMass student-athletes were named to the Atlantic 10 Commissioner's Honor Roll as announced by the conference. All told, a total of 1,618 student-athletes in the Atlantic 10 posted a 3.5 grade-point-average for the Spring 2013 semester marking the second highest total in league history. For UMass it marked the most to earn the distinction since the Fall 2011 Honor Roll where 130 qualified.

The Minutewomen's two NCAA regional qualifiers participated in the NCAA East Preliminary meet in Greensboro N.C., on Saturday afternoon. Rachelle Bourque was the first to compete in the javelin while Becky Stoyle waited to vie for a spot at Nationals in the triple jump later on in the meet. Neither managed to qualify for the NCAA Championship, however the pair have each put together two of the best individual seasons in UMass history.

After Becky Stoyle and Rachelle Bourque each played a major part in UMass' best team finish in the New England Championship since the 1998-99 season two weeks ago, the pair received word that their best marks of the season qualified them for the NCAA East Region Championship. Bourque and Stoyle will each compete on Saturday in Greensboro, N.C. and will square off with the east region's best for the top 12 spots in their event in order to advance to the NCAA Championship.

The Minutewomen are tied with Tufts for first place in a field of 21 with 26 points after day one of the New England Championship at Stonehill College. Julie LaFreniere's squad also reigned in their sixth gold medal of the year on Friday when Rachelle Bourque threw 150-feet 5-inches in the javelin to win her second New England Championship of her four year career. The mark shatters her previous UMass record of 143-feet, 1-inch and qualifies her for NCAA East Regionals in two weeks.

WT&F Crowns Two On Day Two Of A-10's May 5, 2013

The Minutewomen finished seventh of 13 with 67 points in the Atlantic 10 Championship finale Sunday afternoon in Charlotte, N.C. The team once again found most of its success in the field and was able to grab two gold and a bronze medal on the day. The first of the two champions was Kelsey Crawford who fought through two days of tough competition to win her first gold medal in the heptathlon. The freshman scored a total of 4685 points and was just 25 points ahead of Temple's Kiersten LaRoche. Crawford scored most of her points with her talents in throwing events with a first place mark in the javelin and the shot put. Her 4685 points is also a personal best and she currently has the third best score in UMass history. Crawford is the first Minutewoman to win the heptathlon since Melissa Ward in 2000. The Houston, Texas native then scored later in the shot put with a seventh place mark of 43-feet, 3.75-inches.

Ingham Claims Bronze Men's A-10 Day Two Performance May 5, 2013

Nick Ingham became the sixth UMass athlete to earn All-Conference Honors in the decathlon on Sunday at the 2013 Outdoor Atlantic 10 Championship in Charlotte, N.C. The Pembroke, Mass. native scored 6065 points for a third place finish in the event. The freshman worked with Coach Jackson and Coach Carter to learn eight of the 10 events needed to compete in the decathlon. This is his second bronze medal of the year after winning third place in the heptathlon at the indoor Atlantic 10 Championship.

Michael Cyphers Highlights Day One Of A-10's May 4, 2013

Freshman, Michael Cyphers grabbed the spotlight for the Minutemen in the pole vault on day one of the Atlantic 10 Championship in Charlotte, N.C. Cyphers finished third in a tight three-way competition with Kevin Calhoun of Charlotte and Jordan Burandt of URI. The event came down to the final vault, Calhun and Burandt all fouled out and had Cyphers cleared his final attempt of 16-feet, 3-inches he would have been crowned the A-10 Champion. The Lebanon, N.H. native just missed the mark and would settle for the bronze in the meet. The mark also places Cyphers tied for second in the UMass record book.

Rachelle Bourque Crowned Javelin A-10 Champion May 4, 2013

To start off the Atlantic 10 Championship Rachelle Bourque was an early inspiration to her teammates, claiming her second A-10 Championship in her career at UMass. Bourque becomes the first Minutewoman to win back-to-back outdoor championships since Christina DeRosa back in 2007 and 2008 in the 10,000 meter run. In the process, her golden mark of 143-feet, 1-inch broke her own school record. UMass stands in fourth place overall in the meet with 36 total points.

The Minutemen will compete in the A-10 Championship at the Irwin Belk Track & Field Center for the final time due to Charlotte leaving the Atlantic 10 Conference at the end of the season. UMass is expected to score most of it's points on the track however the freshman standout Nick Ingham is expected to win the decathlon this weekend. Also fellow freshman Michael Cyphers has battled injury this outdoor season and as shown progress in the pole vault week-to-week and could make an impact this weekend.

On Monday afternoon the UMass Sports Luncheon Committee chose to honor track and field's Becky Stoyle and Sam Rush of lacrosse as this week's UMass Co-Athlete's of the Week. This is Stoyle's fourth time winning the honor this season while this is Rush's second time claiming the honor. Stoyle broke the outdoor school record as well as the UMass Track and Field Complex facility record in the triple jump on Saturday while Rush was a key factor in the women's lacrosse program's fifth consecutive Atlantic 10 Conference Title.

It was business as usual on the track for Minutemen as most of their 117.5 total points came from their runners in their own Pre-Conference Meet. The Minutemen fell short of Northeastern with 140 points while UMass grabbed second with 117.5 points. They finished 23 in the top eight on the track and battled for 10 New England Championship worthy marks.

The Minutemen placed fifth overall in a field of 14 teams on Saturday afternoon in the first of two home meets this outdoor season. UMass underclassmen made up the majority of the team's 71 points on the day with the top performances coming from Michael Cyphers, Gregory Copeland and Stephen Bigelow. In Division-I competition the Minutemen came out on top with 149 points in a field of five.

The Minutewomen for a second week straight found success in a variety of events placing third overall in a field of 19 with 94 points, falling short of UConn and Boston College. However in just Division-I competition UMass found itself in a very tight finish in the top three in a field of seven. UMass finished second in D-I competition with 117 points, just falling a point short of UConn and a point ahead of Boston College. Becky Stoyle was the team's only competitor to finish first in an event but the Minutewomen battled to score seven in the top three.

UMass women's track and field exited the AIC Invitational as the better of 16 total teams with a tally of 213 points. The runner up was the host AIC with 89 points. The Minutewomen clicked on all cylinders, exceeding on the track and in the field for 42 top-eight performances on the afternoon. Coach LaFreniere left the meet in great spirits not only due to the team's success but because two of her top athletes came back from injury, ready to race in outdoor competition.

UMass' performance on Saturday afternoon at Coxe Cage was highlighted by Benjamin Groleau's first place finish in the mile with a time of 4:11.02. Becky Stoyle is no stranger to making the headlines for the Minutewomen this indoor season and achieved perhaps the greatest honor of her collegiate career thus far at the URI Coaches Invite on Saturday afternoon. The sophomore out of Pembroke, Mass. is now the greatest UMass athlete ever to compete in the indoor triple jump. Stoyle leaped 40-feet, 7.75-inches, breaking Janey Meeks' 40-foot, 4-inch mark set back in 1995. The sophomore's mark is now also the best distance an A-10 athlete has set so far in the 2013 indoor season by 7.75-inches. The mark is also just a half-inch shy of last year's A-10 championship mark and 1.25-inch shy of the all-time A-10 Conference Championship record.

On Friday afternoon it was Michael Cyphers who had the best individual performance of the day, along with four New England Championship qualifiers. Last week the freshman and teammate Gregory Copeland tied for the fourth best mark all-time at UMass in the indoor pole vault with a height of 15-1. This week Cyphers pulled away and leaped a mark of 15-5 for third all-time, surpassing Wes Shaw's height of 15-3. McGowan's time of 31:34.6 was good enough for his third top two finish of the season for UMass.

UMass Cross Country Holds Off Maine's Big Three, 29-30 Sep 8, 2012

John O'Shea (Dracut, Mass.) kicked off the beginning of the season with a team best, 18:32.26 to finish third overall on his home course in UMass but it was a team effort to hold off Maine and claim a 29-30 win over the Black Bears. After Maine placed one, two and four, it took a group effort by the Minutemen to pull off the victory. Lead by freshman, Quentin Stipp (Arlington, Mass.) the Minutemen placed fifth through eleventh to hold off Maine's number four runner Don Kerrigan. In that battalion of Minutemen, four of Coach O'Brien's recruits this season placed to solidify their lead. Following O'Shea and Stipp, Paul Merriman (Manlius, N.Y.) finished sixth overall and third for the team with a time of 18:37.87. Crossing the finish line just behind Merriman at 18:37.87, in seventh place was Zachary Florence (East Longmeadow, Mass.). Finishing fifth for the Minutemen was Daniel Sheldon (West Windsor, Mass.) with a time of 18:54.60 in his first race as a Minuteman.

Last season the men graduated four of their athletes including their strongest runner, Sean Duncan. This year the team has a pool of returnees ready to carry the team with another year of experience under their belt and Coach O'Brien has brought in 13 newcomers to the program who are as ready for the collegiate level as any. The team is returning a solid competitor in Patrick McGowan (Mansfield, Mass.), who was a top five finisher for the team in six of his seven meets last year. McGowan's teammate, Antony Taylor (Arlington, Mass.) is also returning this year. Taylor finished top five for the Minutemen in all seven meets last season and broke the top 10 overall once in 2011 at the Minuteman Invite with a time of 22:54.79.

The U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) honored UMass along with 171 other Division I women's track and field programs with a 3.0 GPA or higher in the spring semester of 2012. Out of every Division I women's track and field team in the nation UMass had the 46th best GPA with a 3.34. Duke University recorded the highest GPA with a 3.58.

Daniel Wu is recognized across the A-10 conference as one of the best student athletes in outdoor track and field competition in his senior season. The Tenafly, N.J. native broke what was the school long jump record this season, leaping a mark of 24-00.25 at the UNH Pre-Conference Meet. He now sits at second best in UMass history in the long jump behind fellow senior, Zach Koncki. Wu placed seventh in the long jump at the 2012 Outdoor A-10 Championships with a distance of 22-11.75. He was also the team's best competitor in the triple jump this year. His best mark came at the 2012 Outdoor A-10 Championships when he set a mark of 44-11.75, placing eleventh overall.

The Minutemen tallied XX points at the UMass Track and Field Complex on Saturday and will conclude action at the 2012 Conference Championships on Sunday.

A-10 Championships On The Horizon For Women's Track & Field May 4, 2012

So far this season UMass has had two second place finishes and one first place finish as a team in three team scored meets. One of those meets was back on April 14 when they hosted the UMass Invitational. With team success comes individual success and there have been strong showings from all events and all ages. Week to week the UMass has been able to add New England qualifiers, new school records and many personal bests to their credit. So far the Minutewomen have 14 New England qualifiers and will look to add more this week.

Tim McCormack of the men's lacrosse team and Nalis Mbianda of the women's track and field team were named Co-Athletes of the Week on Tuesday. 4x400 Meter Relay Squad Leads Minutewomen At New England Championships Feb 26, 2012

Day two of the New England Championships was a group effort towards the team's success. There were seven top ten performances by the Minutewomen at Boston University and it was the 4x400 meter relay team that stood out and made its way into the UMass record book. The squad consisted of Sarah Bitterman (Marblehead, Mass.), Meghan Leahy (Sterling, Mass.), Michelle Jenssen (Mansfield, Mass.) and Meghan Landry (Marshfield, Mass.) who all contributed to a third place finish in the event with a time of 3:52.74. The time beats the fifth all-time best record of 3:52.79 in the event which was set in 1985.

UMass sits tied at 18th place with Wheaton Mass., Southern Maine and Providence after day one of the New England Championships at Boston University. Senior Chrissy Silvar (Fitchburg, Mass.) led the Minutewomen with a strong showing in the pole vault on Friday. Silvar took eighth place while adding to the team score with a mark of 11-06.50. Another event UMass had success in was in the distance medley relay. Kayla Baldwin (Andover, Mass.), Meghan Leahy (Sterling, Mass.), Courtney Neves New Bedford, Mass.) and Rachel Hilliard (Hookstown, Pa.) all contributed to a 12:10.85 seventh place finish in the event. The team's performance also benefitted the Minutewomen in team score.

With many events yet to be run, the UMass men's track and field squad has yet to inch into the team rankings at the New England Championships after one day of competition. Day Three ResultsSenior and freshman Lisa Wilson and Nalis Mbianda were in action in the final day of the ECAC Championships on Sunday in the shot put. Wilson placed eighth in her flight and 14th overall, while Mbianda took 11th in her flight and 20th overall. The senior posted a distance of 44-08.00, while the freshman threw a distance of 42-00.50. Of the 59, the UMass men's indoor and outdoor track and field teams were recognized on the list. The Atlantic 10 Conference announced on Monday afternoon that freshman Michelle Jenssen was the A-10 Women's Indoor Track and Field Rookie Performer of the Week. This marks the third consecutive week that a UMass athlete has received the award. Jenssen has been the Minutewomen's top runner in the 400 meters this season, and was recognized for her efforts at the Giegengack Invitational.
