Boston Globe: Hingham Girls Earn First Track Title Jun 02, 2013

Hingham won its first MIAA All-State girls’ track championship Saturday afternoon at Westfield State University. “I can’t believe how well they performed at what one would consider one of the hardest meets of the year and they just stood up and ran their hardest,” Hingham coach Dave Jewett said. The Harbormen took first with 35 points despite having only one individual first-place winner, sophomore Sierra Irvin. Lowell was second (32) and Notre Dame of Hingham third (30). Irvin won the 400 in 56.82 seconds, and anchored the 4 x 400-relay team for a fourth-place spot in 4:01.91.

Boston Globe: Newton North Boys Capture Track Crown Jun 02, 2013

WESTFIELD — Powered by its “Big Four,” the Newton North boys’ track team captured the MIAA All-State title Saturday at Westfield State University. “Ryan Lucken finished first in the 400 meters, Carl Whitham took second in the shot put, Gabe Montague second in the 800, and David Oluwadara second in the triple jump, so they all came through and did what we hoped they would,” said coach Jim Blackburn. The Tigers finished with 48¾ points, dominating the rest of the field. Lincoln-Sudbury took second with 28 points while Newton South finished with 27. In addition to the Big Four’s performance, the Tigers took second in the 4 x 400 relay behind Acton-Boxboro. The Colonials finished in 3:22.04, a tad faster than Newton North’s 3:22.48.

BOYS ALL STATE PREVIEW / VIRTUAL RESULTS May 31, 2013

With Mansfield graduating an all-star cast that holstered not only multiple All-Americans but a handful of National Champion athletes it may be time to crown a new king of Massachusetts T&F. Many would look to Lowell and hope they could repeat their dominate performances from this past fall and winter to earn their triple crown.  Only a few teams have had the distinction of winning state titles each season of the year and if Lowell could somehow put it together to win this spring season it would certainly be considered one of the greatest years of athletics in their city’s history.

GIRLS ALL STATE PREVIEW / VIRTUAL RESULTS May 30, 2013

To say that the Lady Tigers of Newton North are a perennial powerhouse on the Massachusetts track scene would be quite an understatement, as one would have to look as far back as June of 2009 to find another teams name engraved on the MIAA All-State Track & Field Championship trophy. How will the Tigers fare this year without their big name star, Carla Forbes competing in three events? The same as they always have: relying on the support of their entire TEAM.  The coaching staff and athletes on the Newton North team will be the first to tell you that their dominance in prior years has never been about just one person, but that of a combination of many coming together to realize their potential and capability to accomplish amazing performances when the pressure is on. They have proven time and time again to get things done when and where they need to and one can be sure that once the gun has fired so too will the Tigers.
