Mike Schlichting

This workout of the week was filmed and edited by two Newton North runners Jared Freedman and Carter Harrison. They captured teammates Gabe Montague and Mike Schlichting last week as they prepared for tomorrows Footlocker Cross Country Championships at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx. They truly captured two very dedicated and hard working athletes in action as they cranked out 800 after 800 on the track. The Newton North superstars will be looking to earn a trip to the finals in San Diego by finishing in the Top 10.  We would like to thank both Jared and Carter for a job well done !    

Four teams arrived at Newton North's now famous $200 million complex on Tuesday undefeated and looking for a league title. Somehow, three of those teams left undefeated, and having won a league title. And for the first time in my coaching career, a local TV news crew from Fox 25 even covered the meet for their 6:00 and 10:00 broadcasts, perhaps a sign that track and field might soon move off of the periphery in this state.

The 1000m continues to be a bright spot for the state.  On Saturday, freshman Maya Halprin Adams (Cambridge R&L) won the Large School event in 3:10, then on Sunday three girls ran under the Small School meet record of 3:08.12 set in 2006 by Meg Looney.  Alexia Lipman (Broomfield) won the event in a MA#4 time of 3:04.07. She was followed by Catalina Dominick of Danvers (3:05.66) and Brooke Hansel of Lunenburg (3:06.30). 

The beginning of the outdoor season signals the end of the indoor season.  Over the next few days, MileSplitMass will take a look at the top performers from each class and highlight some of the outstanding performances of the indoor season.
