Salute to Our Seniors: Jessica Currier

Jessica Currier/ Dennis Yarmouth High School

JC was the heart and soul of our Cross-Country team. She is one of the most motivated and hardest working athletes we have ever had in my 30+ years of coaching DY ------Coach Hoar

What do you enjoy doing outside of your running?

I love to go to the beach, bike, and listen to music in my free time when I'm not out running.

What are you going to miss most about your high school running career?

I'm going to miss my coach. I have learned so much from Coach Hoar about how life and running are connected. Running XC and track in high school has made me mature as a person and has helped mold me into a person who can handle the challenges of the real world. Also I'll miss the dual meets and Emass/ All State meets.

What was your most memorable race?

It's a toss up between the twilight meet and the All State meet. It was so awesome running against such good runners. At the twilight meet it was amazing running under the lights and getting a PR. But at the all state meet there were nothing but good runners, and coming in top 27 and getting a PR at Franklin park  made me happy.

Out of all your high school running accomplishments, what stands out the most?

Improving so much my last XC season. I went from getting around 21 minutes for a 5k to getting 19 minutes and being a top competitor in the state and being recognized as that. I loved being an ACL all star and being a captain of my team.

What was the most difficult obstacles you had to overcome?

Getting injured almost immediately after XC and being out for a really long time. I had to go to PT for about 2 months and was restricted to core exercises and the elliptical. I missed all of indoor and didn't compete outdoors. It was hard to think of what my times would've been after such a good XC season and translating those times on the track. It was hard to stay positive, I am just really hoping to get my speed back over this summer for when I go off to UMaine.

Do you have any advice for younger runners?

Stick with it and try to remember it's always going to be harder mentally than it is physically. Running is what you put into it, if you work at it and stay consistent in training and positive, you will definitely get nothing but better.

If you were to change anything about your high school running career, what would you change?

I would've trained like I did this previous year my younger seasons so I could be a top competitor in all my seasons and not just my last one. If I had only realized I could be as good as I had gotten I would've trained smarter. But I'm glad I got to experience all that I did and to have had a great coach and team to push me day in and day out in practice etc.

What are your college plans?

I am going to be running for the University of Maine Orono, XC and track. I'm pretty nervous and excited all rolled into one. I'm hoping to be better than ever before and PR and have the track seasons I didn't get to have this past year. I'll be studying Exercise Science . It'll be different running division 1!!!

Who would you like to say thank you to?

I'd like to thank my coach who has made me the person and runner I am today- and for preparing me for college and life. Also my mom, who has helped me a lot through my injury and kept me strong through that hard time.
