Northampton celebrates after winning the boys' team crown.
There was drama everywhere at Thursday's Division 4 Championships.
An expected battle for the boys' team title wasn't determined until late into the meet. On the infield, the shortest race in the meet appeared to take the longest to finish.
Beginning with the team portion of the meet, Northampton held off Wakefield, 67-61. The two squads were tangled in a epic fight to the finish. With just three events left, Northampton held a scant three-point lead over its rival. In the girls. Milton managed to pull away from eventual runner-up Tewksbury midway into the meet to win by a convincing 95-74 margin.
Confusion in the timing of the fourth heat of the girls' 55-meter dash forced top-seed Brooke-Lynn Williams of Norton to win the finals twice before she was awarded her second straight crown. Due to the fact that none of the times in the heat could be listed as official, meet personnel decided to re-run all the heats again at the end of the meet. Williams, who had to scratch from the 300m because of the mix-up, eventually won her title with a time of 7.05. The Norton All American also ran a leg on her school's first-place 4x200m, which was timed in 1:49.18.
Milton proudly displays its winning banner after taking the girls' crown.
Hanging on the shoulders of the front-running Bridget Mitchell of Milton for most of the mile, Tewksbury's Rachel Sessa bolted past her rival with a little more than a lap remaining to win with a meet record of 4:57.16. Mitchell secured second in 5:02.11.
Milton sophomore Collette O'Leary established a meet record in the girls' 600m with a winning time of 1:34.92. Her older sister, senior Collette O'Leary, was a winner in the 1,000m, overtaking Sessa late in the race and finishing at 2:59.07. Sessa took second at 3:00.19.
Milton's foursome of Josie Cousineau, MItchell and the O"Leary siaters captured the 4x800m relay with a MR of 9:31.71.
Longmeadow's Abbie Mokwiah has a meet-record toss of 43-6.75 in the shot put.
Burncoat's Rodney Agyare-May broke his own meet record in the 600m with a solo effort of 1:20.99, .01 under his 2016 mark.
Milton super sophomore Smith Charles, seeded No. 1 in three different events, didn't disappoint. Charles blazed to a meet record in the 55m dash with a time of 6.45. He also took the high jump with a leap of 6-4 and was first in the long jump with a distance of 22-3.5.
Medway's Ava Vasile was a double-victor, earning gold in the 55m hurdles (8.53) and the 300m (40.39).
