Salute to Our Seniors: Kasey Cannister , Hamilton-Wenham Regional High School

Kasey Cannister, Hamilton-Wenham Regional High School

What do you enjoy doing outside of your running?

I enjoy yearbook, crafts, volunteering, and playing my flute in the band.

What are you going to miss most about your high school running career?

I will miss my team, especially my 4x1 relay team. I have been running with the same relay team for the past 2 years and will miss the moments, wins, and loses we shared together.

What was your most memorable race?

My most memorable race was a 4x4 relay at an Indoor Track meet my junior year. It was not planned for me to be running the race, but I was spontaneously put in it just after eating a sandwich (thinking I was done running). This was my first time ever running a 400. I was terribly nervous but the senior girls helped me have a positive attitude about it and I continued to love the 400 following that race.

Out of all your high school running accomplishments, what stands out the most?

Of all my running accomplishments, my 4x1 relay at the Cape Ann League Meet, my Senior Year, stands our the most. This was the last time I got to run the 4x1 in a meet and without a clue as to what we placed before awards, as the race was so close, we accomplished 3rd place and I went home with my first medal after 4 years of Track!

What was the most difficult obstacle you had to overcome?

The most difficult obstacle I had to overcome was continuing to have a positive attitude even when things did not go as planned. Sometimes I wouldn't get put in the race of my choice but I had to have faith that my coach knew what he was doing and keep a positive attitude so I could run my best and motivate my teammates.

Do you have any advice for younger runners?

Run Happy! No matter what is going on in your life or within track, keep a positive attitude, be silly, and have fun. Track involves a team that is both serious about competing and serious about having fun.

If you were to change anything about your high school running career.....what would you change?

My one regret in my high school running career is that I did not do Indoor Track freshmen year. SO! I would sign up for Indoor Track freshmen year if I were to change anything.

What are your college plans?

I will be attending Houghton College, in New York, and will be majoring in Media Arts & Visual Communication. Along with school work, I will continue to compete in both Indoor and Outdoor Track & Field.

Who would you like to say thank you to?

I would like to say thank you to my coaches, parents, and teammates for supporting me in my journey as a student athlete. You all pushed me to do my best, never give up, and enjoy what I do. Freshmen, you are all wonderful people and athletes -- continue to push yourselves as you'll be amazed by what you can accomplish by senior year. We Eat Nails!
