ANDOVER -- On a day when the Lowell High School boys track and field team didn't appear to dominate, they were still quite dominant.
In a testament to the sheer talent and depth of the Lowell program, the Red Raiders had just four first-place finishes and still cruised to victory at Saturday's Merrimack Valley Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Andover High School.
Asked if he owned the Haverhill High record in the 100-meter dash a week ago, the very modest Alex Mayhew — with the help of more than a little encouragement — provided a prediction with his answer.
This past weekend had some memorable performances by Massachusetts athletes throughout the Northeast.
For many years the Coaches Invitational was the premier event of the season as runners test their mid-season conditioning against the best in the State. Now our May schedule has given our athletes more options with meets like the Andover Boosters Meet ,The Glenn D. Loucks Games, and the New Balance Twilight Series. These meets have slightly downsized the Coaches Meet but we still had plenty of fine performances across the board.
Who says track and field is an individual sport?
Algonquin Regional tied for the third-most Class A event wins at Saturday’s Central Mass. Class Championships, but still managed to win the team title.
The Tomahawks, who won this meet eight straight years from 2003 to 2010, took back the first-place trophy by piling up 140 points to easily outdistance Shrewsbury (117) and defending champion Wachusett (88).
A pundit could proclaim, with confidence, that the St. John’s track team is, in fact, back on track.
The Pioneers affirmed their return to power during Saturday’s Central Mass. Track and Field Class Championships, winning their first Class A title since 2009 by out-pointing defending champion Wachusett Regional, 101.60-87, at Shrewsbury High.
Newton North dominated yesterday’s State Coaches Invitational boys meet with four different first place finishers, but it was BC High’s Jordan Samuels who shone brightest on the day.
Samuels won the 110-meter hurdles in 15.06 seconds, came in second place in the triple jump with a leap of 46 feet, 31⁄2 inches, and helped the Eagles place fourth in the 4 x 100 relay to earn Athlete of the Meet honors.
“Honestly I thought that I did pretty bad today, so I wasn’t expecting to win the award,” said a modest Samuels. “I was on the phone telling my dad that I did badly when they announced I had won it, so I was pretty shocked.”
SOMERVILLE — Brockton’s Patricia Montiero was the day’s only double winner, placing first in 100-meter hurdles and long jump, Saturday afternoon at the Girls’ State Coaches Invitational at Dilboy Stadium.
In the hurdles, Montiero finished in 15.16 seconds, 0.17 seconds faster than Annalisa Debari of Melrose.
Personal bests ruled the day at the State Coaches Invitational girls meet yesterday at Dilboy Stadium in Somerville.
The meet, which drew more than 30 teams including some from as far out as Williamstown, kicked off the last lap of the season in style, as many teams showed that they are at the top of their game.
Austin Prep’s Elizabeth Lombardo surprised many with a masterful win in the mile, after coming into the day a fourth seed. Her victorious time of 5:16.10 was not only the fastest in her heat by at least 10 seconds, she ran seven seconds faster than second place finisher Meghan Grela of Ursuline.
Milesplitmass will be carrying all the New England Collegiate Championship Results Live. Check back here all weekend long for live results from Stonehill College.
This is no doubt the biggest weekend of Track and Field with teams competing all around the State, even a few travelling into the State of New York for the prestigious Glenn Louk Games. North of Boston in the Merrimack Valley we have the Annual Andover Boosters Invitational, a classic co-ed team Championship with some of the States best teams battling it out. Just about 20 Miles South at Somerville's Dilboy Stadium is the Girls State Coaches Invitationalas the some of the State's elite battle it out for individual titles. The boys half of the Coaches Invitational is down on the South Coast at Greater New Bedford Vocational High School. Both Dilboy Stadium and GNBV are two of the best Track and Field facilities around.
As Weymouth High girls track and field coach Mike Miller observed, “In meets like this, kids either rise to the challenge or they tense up.”
It was the former for the Wildcats on Wednesday as they snagged a share of the Bay State Conference Carey Division crown by tying mighty Newton North, 68-68, at home.
Both teams finished the regular season at 6-0-1.It was Weymouth’s first outdoor track title, not to mention the first time the Wildcats hadn’t lost to Newton North in their 15 years in the Bay State Conference.
The running community has really rallied together after the events of April 15th. The MSTCA has donated $5000 for the One Fund, and then raised another $5000 at the recent State Relay Championships. It's an amazing outpouring of support by our Association and the Track and Field community throughout the state.
Last spring, Wachusett’s Colin Bennie traveled to Fitchburg and proceeded to thoroughly manhandle a deep, talented field to capture the state title in the 2 mile. If Bennie is looking to defend his title this time around, he’s not saying. The mega talent from Central Mass hasn’t ruled out dropping down in attempt to come away with state meet gold in the mile or even the 800.
It's a very big weekend for Track and Field around the State and Milesplitmass is covering as much as possible. We have three Freshman -Sophomore Races on the schedule and we are including as much information as possible on this page.
Milesplitmass will be covering this weekends Steeplechase competition at Regis college. The famous New England stat Guru Larry Newman forwarded us his fine work on the girls Steeplechase. Any additions please email Larry at NETRACK@aol.com.
It’s an annual rite of spring – the Hingham High boys and girls track teams enter their final Patriot League Keenan Division meet against Whitman-Hanson with the championship on the line. Usually another perfect season for the Harbormen is at stake, and usually the Panthers are the only rivals with a real chance to upset them.
Deep and tough proved to be Weston’s calling card.
The meet was dubbed as the Div. 4 State Coaches Relays but it was Weston that turned the competition into its own highlight reel show at John B. Reilly Field.
John Monz’s boys’ and girls’ teams combined for six victories to take both team titles, closing out two days of relay meets across Eastern Mass.
On a beautiful day for track and field, the North Andover boys’ and Central Catholic girls’ each won Division 2 Massachusetts State Track Coaches Relays titles.
Another year and another title for the Newton North girls’ track team as the Tigers took home their fourth consecutive Division 1 Massachusetts State Track Coaches Relays title on Sunday.
The Tigers racked up 73 points in the victory while for the fourth consecutive year Andover finished second (63).

Weston High School Senior Emily Savage had a day to remember at Franklin Field at the historic Penn Relays. The Oklahoma bound Pole vaulter captured the Pole Vault with a jump of 13 Ft 1 1/2 inches. In the process Savage set a Connecticut State and as well as a Penn Relays record. Her vault was a personal best by 6 inches. Watch the Milesplit interview below.
Cameron Lyle, a University of New Hampshire track and field athlete from Plaistow, looked forward to wrapping up his competitive career with his best results ever in the America East championships early next month.
No longer.
Instead, Lyle is scheduled to be at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston Wednesday morning, intent on giving an ill young man he does not know a better chance to live. Lyle was due at the hospital at 6 a.m. for a procedure that will begin the process of donating his bone marrow.
BOSTON — In the aftermath of the bombings at the Boston Marathon Monday, dozens of people stepped up to help the injured. Among them was a physics teacher and track coach at Notre Dame Academy in Hingham.
“I don’t really remember what I did or how I did,” Rick Kates said from Florida, where he is visiting family. He was working as a track and field official for the Massachusetts Track & Field Officials Association on the finish line Monday, and trying to spot 18 of his former students who were running the race.
From Hopkinton to Boston more than a half a million people line the streets the third Monday in April, beginning their holiday by cheering the never-ending stream of runners that pass by.
The women of Wellesley College know their place at the halfway mark. Their youthful enthusiasm provides the runners some mental fuel to make it to Boylston Street and the finish line at Copley Square that’s still 13-miles away.
The bars and restaurants are crowded with people, most glued to this storied race pictured on the flat screens. The city is buzzing. Everyone is happy in Beantown. It’s Patriots Day, the date designated for the oldest and most-fabled 26.2-mile footrace in the world, the Boston Marathon.
The BAA kicked off some pre-marathon races this morning as the Annual Elite and Scholastic Miles took center stage at the finish line on Boylston Street. The Scholastic mile is only open to High School milers that live in the eight cities and towns that the Boston Marathon travels through. BAA Coach Mike Pieroni and his staff put on a spectacular event for these High School kids. With the exception of the prize money, these runners are treated no different than the champions on Patriots' Day. They are surrounded by photographers and media from around the world, they have personalized bib numbers, custom Addidas uniforms, and they even get to raise their Silver Awards over their heads on the podium. All this in front of a packed set of finish line bleachers. It doesn't get any better than this for the high school runners.
HAVERHILL — Not long before she stepped onto the track for the 4x100 relay, Andover senior Rachel Annino discovered the reputation of her opponent in the anchor leg, New England 55-meter indoor champion and New Hampshire legend Betsy Garnick of Bishop Guertin and Pelham.
“I had no idea how amazing she was,” said Annino. “Coach (Peter) Comeau said that she was the complete package. So I was pretty nervous. I just wanted to reach the finish line. It was all adrenaline.”
Taking the baton with a slight lead, Annino was able to hold off meet MVP Garnick to give Andover the victory in the 4x100 in 51.80 — the win that clinched the Ottaviani Invitational team title yesterday afternoon.
The Boston Athletic Association is excited to announce the fields for the 2013 B.A.A. Invitational Scholastic Mile. First contested in 2009, the B.A.A. Invitational Scholastic Mile was developed to provide a competitive opportunity for two boys and two girls from each of the eight cities and town along the marathon route. The Scholastic Mile features a boys and a girls race contested on the roads. Starting on Boylston Street, the course is 3 laps of a block in the Back Bay, passing spectator grandstands 3 times and finishing at the Boston Marathon Finish Line. Since the events inception, the scholastic races have been run in conjunction with a professional men’s and a professional women’s mile, providing the high school athletes with the opportunity to see some of the worlds top milers compete on the same course that they are racing. In 2010, a Middle School 1k was added, also highlighting the racing talent of the young athletes from the cities and towns along the marathon route. Like the mile, two athletes of each gender are selected from the marathon cities and towns for the Middle School 1k. The event is sponsored by the B.A.A. with strong support from adidas.
Their efforts produced a catalog of landmark performances and for the first time ever, the state’s two most electrifying female distance runners will collide at the state spring track championships.
Hingham’s Julie McConville clocked a scalding 10:18.02 two-mile during the indoor campaign while legend-in-the-making Catarina Rocha of Peabody will move up from the mile, where she set a state meet record of 4:49.14 this winter, to defend her outdoor two-mile title.
Their showdown at the state meet at Westfield State later this season will be worth the price of admission. The pair of heavyweights will have a strong supporting cast in Abby McNulty of Bishop Feehan, Jordan O’Dea of Dennis-Yarmouth and Erin Dietz of Bedford.
Newton Sports Photography has been an enormous part of our success the last few years. We have all enjoyed their fantastic work and it has helped make our State one of the fastest growing sites in the Milesplit network. Milesplitmass would love to lend a hand for a great cause, as Jack Prior of Newtonsportsphotography.com is running the Boston Marathon in a few weeks. Jack has captured some of the most amazing track and field photo's and we can support his fundraising efforts by purchasing some amazing photo's at a very low cost. All proceeds will go to the National Organization for Rare Disorders.
FOXBOROUGH — Liz Holmes didn’t have a whole lot of fun this winter.
After making a splash on the Massachusetts high school running scene as a Foxborough High School freshman, and quitting soccer last fall in favor of being coached by her mother in cross-country, and taking the Hockomock League girls’ cross-country title in October as a sophomore, she seemed primed for another big track season.
But that Oct. 28 Hockomock meet — a 3.1-mile race she won in 18:39.15, a full 40 seconds ahead of second-place Shelby Cuddeback of Attleboro — is also her most recent. She missed the entire indoor track season with a stress reaction in her left femur.
Carl Joseph of Brockton has picked up where he left off last season for the University of Massachusetts-Boston outdoor track and field team. The sophomore high jumper was named the Little East Conference field athlete of the week on Monday after an impressive showing at the season-opening University of Charlotte 49ers Classic in North Carolina. Joseph became the program’s second All-America performer last spring by finishing fourth at the NCAA Div. 3 Championships in Claremont, Calif., with a jump of 6-9. To begin the 2013 season, Joseph traveled to North Carolina and placed first with a jump of a school-record 7-1, defeating competitors from Divs. 1, 2 and 3 colleges. That height ranks as the best in Div. 3 nationally this season.
In an age when basketball and football dominate the sports headlines across most college campuses, track and field is a sport that usually takes a back seat.
The Outdoor Track and Field Schedule will be updated as we get more information. We tried to give you everything you need on this one page. Please click on the Meet name for more information on the entry procedure. Any mistakes please let us know
The Winter Season has ended and Coach Miller and Coach "Z" wrap up the season with the Exchange Zone Awards Show. This was filmed prior to the New England Championships.

How do you follow up two Division III State Relay titles, Two Division III State Titles, an All State Meet record performance in the 300 Meter run, and a New England record in the 5000 Meters? Well that's easy, just break a 29 year old State record in the 4x800 Meter relay.
Staples Ct. boys distance medley relay took home top honors today at the New Balance Indoor National Track and Field Championships at Manhattan's Armory Track and Field Center. Running the second fastest all-time New England indoor performance in the Distance Medley Relay, Staples covered the 4000-meter distance in 10:07.01. Their winning performance falls just shy of the national and New England record of 9:59.94, set by Gloucester, MA in 2000.
WOW...Running out of heat seven in the qualifying rounds, Brian Crossman's quartet in the 4 x 200 just set the New England indoor record at the New Balance Indoor Nationals. The Acton-Boxborough team of William Tejeda, Andrew Doelp, Nick Usoff and Brian Sommers combined for a time of 1:29.28. That betters the previous New England record of 1:29.34, set by the team from Hyde Leadership Academy from Hamden Ct. in 2005. It also betters the previous Ma. record of 1:29.6 (h) by Weymouth from 1995. Before the A-B fireworks, Windsor, Ct. had run 1:29.83 from heat four, at that time moving them to #6 all-time New England. With Acton-Boxboro's performance Windsor is now #7 all-time New England. Earlier this year A-B ran 1:31.29. Cambridge Rindge and Latin finished in 1:31.65. The Rindge and Latin school record from 2007 is 1:31.00. That time currently ranks them #12 all-time Ma. indoors in the event.
Hingham High School senior Julie McConville broke both the Massachusetts and New England indoor records for 5000 Meters last night in New York City. Her time of 16:40.6 placed her 3rd place in the highly competitive 5000 meter run at the New Balance Indoor Nationals

Five minutes after the 4x800-meter relay finish, Hingham’s Bill Lumbert was still fighting to catch his breath on the infield of the Reggie Lewis Center. And although getting his wind back was giving Lumbert problems, the Harbormen’s middle-distance ace had absolutely no problem cracking a smile.

For any schoolboy high-jumper, the pinnacle to supremacy in the vertical leap is achieving the seven-foot barrier; clearing a height that’s an impressive 84 inches from the ground to the top of the bar.
Catarina Rocha of Massachusetts, the 2012 Foot Locker cross-country runner-up, ran her last high school indoor track race in glorious style, breaking her meet record in the mile with a PR in last Saturday’s state championships. The Providence-bound senior, 18, from Peabody Veterans Memorial High, clocked 4:49.14 to triumph by 50 meters and erase the state meet record of 4:50.38 she set last year. Next up? A 10-day break before gearing up for spring.
The college schedule is getting pretty intense as the Championship season has begun. Follow your favorite Massachusetts alumni as they accomplish amazing performances.
Hingham’s Andrew Bolze took a seemingly precarious situation and transformed it into All-State gold.
The Division 3 300-meter dash champion, Bolze figured his winning time wouldn’t put him in the seeded heat at Saturday’s MIAA All-State Track Championships at the Reggie Lewis Center. With that in mind, Bolze worked on his starts and twice traveled to Boston to train from the always-tough sixth lane.
