Some may look at Pembroke's request to move up to the Div. 1 varisty boys' race at Saturday's Twilight Cross Country Invitational as somewhat cocky - an upward move by team so good that Div. 2 competition just doesn't offer a challenge. The reality, though, is that Greg Zopatti's crew simply wanted to test itself against teams it may never have the chance to compete against other. To absolutely no one's surprise, the Titans were more than up to the task as they tore through the competition and took the team title, courtesy of four runners in the top 25.
When you have Abbie McNulty race on an extremely fast course, with an electric nighttime atmosphere, you will produce one of the fastest times in the country. That's what happened last night at the Barnstable Fairground. McNulty has left no doubt that she has taken her game to even a higher level, and she is primed and ready for November. Her time of 17:08 was over a minute faster than Sydney Clary (18:13) of Lincoln Sudbury to win the Girls Division 1 Race. Emily Bryson of North Quincy (18:20), Stella Worters of Shepard Hill (18:21), and Lincoln Sudbury's Morgane Butler (18:22) rounded out the top five. The Bishop Feehan Shamrock's ran away with the team title with 77 points over Lincoln Sudbury.
The Pembroke Titans made two requests to the MSTCA. The first request was that they wanted to move up a division and enter the large school race. The second was to run their second seven runners in the division 2 race. Both requests were granted by the MSTCA, and the Titans did not disappoint ! They not only dominated the Large School race by scoring 68 points, but they finished an incredible second place in the Division 2 Race. Coach Zopatti's showcased the depth of the Titan squad as they had eleven runner break the 17 Minute barrier. In the Division 1 Race, the Titans were led by Senior Christian Stafford's second place finish. Stafford and King Philip's Owen Gonser battled to the wire, with Gonser (15:11) edging Stafford (15:12) by less than a second. The Newton North tandem of Gabe Montague (15:28) and Mike Schlichting (15:30) finished 3rd and 4th respectively with Chris Skelly (15:34) of North Middlesex rounding out the Top 5. In the Division 2 Race, a three way battle between Paul Hogan of Burlington, Mike Wyman of Old Rochester, and Swampscott's Matt Mahoney, pursued for most of the 5k race. Hogan pulled away on the final loop winning with a record time of 15:11. Mike Wyman (15:16) edged Mahoney (15:19) for second place
