Rumors were swirling around the the MSTCA State Coaches Invitational that Galen Rupp might not compete at the BU Terrier Invitational later in the afternoon. Many of the coaches and athletes from the high school meet took the fifteen minute drive over to the Boston University campus and they certainly were not disappointed. The Boston University Track and Tennis Center was filled to capacity as they awaited the arrival of Galen Rupp, as he would attempt to break the 3:50 second barrier and possibly threaten the American Record. As soon as Rupp and his Coach Alberto Salazar entered the complex the crowd roared and they would soon witness the fastest mile ever run on Massachusetts soil.
The field included some of the fastest indoor milers ever assembled including David McCarthy (3:55), Rich Peters (3:57), Riley Masters (3:58), Eric Jenkins (3:59), and Tim Ritchie (3:58), but it was Rupp that the crowd came to see and he gave them something really special to remember. After recovering from a relatively slow first 200 Meters, Rupp dismantled the elite field with about 600 Meters to go as he would just miss breaking the American Record . Rupp was clocked at a personal best of 3:50.92. He will run in the 3k next weekend at the New Balance Grand Prix Meet at Reggie Lewis Center.
