With the indoor season just one national championship meet from wrapping up, it's time to shift focus to another group of rising talents in Massachusetts.
This group of sophomores has already made a strong impression on the state's track and field scene, and all signs point to even bigger performances still ahead before their high school careers are finished.
Check out another quartet of Massachusetts Future Stars.
Less than a month removed from winning the mile title at the MIAA Division 1 Indoor Track and Field Championship, Whorton took on the mile and 800m double at New Balance Nationals Indoor. In the mile, she broke 5:00 for the third time this season, running 4:58.52, a season best. In the 800m, she went sub-2:12 for the first time indoors, running 2:11.2 to become the eighth-fastest girl in Massachusetts indoor history.
In his first 800m since the end of May 2025, Martel shattered his previous best by nearly five seconds, running 1:57.70 at New Balance Nationals Indoor. He became just the fourth sophomore in state history to break 2:00 indoors, moving up to No. 2 all-time behind Marcus Reilly (Northbridge). In the history of high school track and field, only 550 sophomore boys have ever broken the two-minute barrier indoors, and Martel is now one of them.
