Highlights
- Carla Forbes continues to top performances that many thought were already the pinnacle of achievement for an athlete at the high school level. Today she ran a MA#1, NE#1, and US#25 time of 7.17 to win the 55m. That time was only .07 away from the meet record set back in 1987 by Jackie Smith of Randolph. If that wasn’t enough of an accomplishment for one day, the Newton North junior launched a 19’6.5” long jump to surpass her own meet record of 19’1” from last year. She is now ranked US#4 in that event. Forbes was on her way to a third win of the day in the 4x200m when contact was made during the final exchange and her Newton North team did not finish.
-
Catarina Rocha took the mile record from fellow Peabody High star Lisa Welsh who set the mark of 4:54.00 back in 1981. Rocha blasted the field by over ten seconds en route to running a US#7 time of 4:53.89. Freshman Liz Holmes of Foxborough showed that the tradition of elite Massachusetts distance runners may continue with her impressive second place showing (5:03.75).

Everybody in the crowd knew it was going to be a special 55m hurdle final when Nicole Genard (Somerville) posted an 8.15 winning time in her heat. The anticipation went through the roof when in the next heat Jen Esposito (Mansfield) responded with an 8.16. Not to be outdone, Vanesssa Clerveaux qualified third at 8.21 and the showdown was set for the finals. It became one for the ages with a photo finish needed to determine the winner. Genard collected the meet record and moved to first all-time with an 8.00 clocking. Clerveaux was only .02 behind and is now tied for second all-time, and Esposito is now fourth all-time with her third place finish and new personal best of 8.13.
-
Rebecca Robinson made easy work of a very talented 300m field and won that event in 39.92. She was the only athlete under 40 seconds and her time is now ranked US#6. Maya Jarostchuk of Acton-Boxborough was second (41.32) and Dominique Hall of Shrewsbury was third (41.34).
-
Swardic Mayanja of Newton North was the class of the field, winning the shot put by over two feet. Mayanja won the competition with a 54’2.5” blast and retains the #2 spot in the state.
-
Yosa Nosamiefan of B.C. High took over the top spot in the state with a 22’5.5” leap in the long jump. Olisa Obiefana of Saugus (22’0.75”) and Kris Horn of Pembroke (21’9.5”) finished second and third, making Nosamiefan earn the win with his second jump of the finals.
-
Liam Cross (Falmouth) and Brendan Sullivan (Westford Academy) took over the top two spots in the state after their compelling match-up in the finals of the 55 meter hurdles. Cross got the win in 7.67, with Sullivan in second (7.72) and Jung Park of Newton South in third (7.79).
-
The boys 2 mile may have been the most stacked field of the day but the pace turned tactical and Kevin Thomas used his recent big meet experience to masterfully manage the field. Thomas walked away with the win in 9:22.21 but Danile McDonald-Meteer of Arlington made him hear footsteps in the final 50 meters. McDonal-Meteer finished second (9:23.50), with Nolan Parsley of Weymouth in third (9:26.33) and Mark Perry of Brookline in fourth (9:29.11).
-
Brendan Robertson won “Runner of the Meet” honors with his meet record performance in the mile. His 4:17.17 topped Chris Barnicle’s 4:17.52 from 2005 and was just enough to hold off a charging Quintin Stipp of Arlington (4:18.45). Robertson and Stipp are now MA#2 and MA#3, respectively.
-
The boys 1000m finished with three wide at the line and one additional athlete just a half step back. Mike O’Donnell of Methuen earned the win at 2:32.91, but it took a photo to separate him from Sean Nee of Dennis-Yarmouth (2:32.93) and Scott Arsenault of Billerica (2:32.97). Ben Groleau of Framingham joined the trio down the homestretch, but was just a fraction back at 2:33.07.
-
Donovan Henry (Catholic Memorial) was impressive with his record setting performance in the 300m. Henry won the event in a blistering 34.72 and surpassed the 2006 record of 35.04 set by Dave Lint of Foxborough. Bo Lewis Jr (Framingham) and Matt Taylor of Bishop Feehan also entered the Massachusetts top ten with their respective times of 35.48 and 35.66. Henry would return later in the meet to give his Catholic Memorial team the lead in the 4x200 meter relay, but it was not enough of a gap to hold off a charging Chelmsford squad who stole the win in a meet record time of 1:31.33.
-
Charles Ruffin (King Philip) improved on his Massachusetts top mark in the 55m with a winning time of 6.44. He also moved to third in New England with the effort. Valerio Silva of Woburn was second (6.55) and sophomore Adam Couitt of Somerset-Berkley was third (6.58). It was the second trip of the day to the podium for Couitt who won the high jump at 6’6” to open the competition.
-
Amy Collins (Wachusett) and Hadlee Coker (Falmouth) had eliminated the field and were deadlocked in the high jump at 5’4” before any running events event started. The pair went to a jump-off after unsuccessful attempts at 5’6”, and the bar was eventually lowered to 5’2” where Collins sealed the win with a final clearance.
-
The Lunenburg 4x800m relay team of Sydney Sandford, Ashley Hyde, Brooke Hansel, and Jennifer Markham moved to MA#2 with their winning time of 9:35.73. They were under a second away from the 2008 meet record set by Lincoln-Sudbury and did a fantastic job of holding off a very talented Franklin team who finished second in 9:39.14.
-
Chelsea Savage was the first female runner in the state to break the 3 minute barrier this season in the 1000m. The Pembroke senior led from the gun and showed tremendous strength over the final 200m to clock in with a MA#1 time of 2:59.71. Almost the entire field was under 3:10, with 18 of the 22 entered posting times of 3:08 or faster.
-
Sophomore Danielle Griffin of Norwell ran a gritty second half of the 600m to hold off Kendal Knous of Franklin. Griffin posted a US#5 time of 1:34.65 in the effort, and Knous was not far behind in 1:35.73.
