Watching the Weymouth program is like taking a step back to a different era. Not because what they do is archaic, but rather, because the values they display are akin to simpler times. Weymouth operates as an extended family; where accountability, support, and work-ethic are the defining principals. These character traits are woven into the fabric of the disciplined and organized system that has been so successful for Coach Mike Miller.
Each member of the team realizes how fortunate they are to be part of something special, but it's Coach Miller who will be the first to tell you that he is the lucky one.
“These past few years, this group has been the most dedicated and motivated group of athletes I’ve ever coached. Running is a full-time passion for them, and they do everything right. They eat right, sleep right, and always make good decisions. We have 48 girls and I’m proud of every single one of them.
Weymouth has taken the concept of a close family unit and applied it to their training and racing. Their depth translates into plentiful training packs where each athlete enjoys the benefit of a continuous support system. But, that depth also creates fierce competition for varsity spots. The athletes understand the competitive nature of having a deep program, and Miller says their loyalty to each other always wins-out. “These girls really back each other up and we never have drama on the team. They are a lot like a family in that they could be very angry about something, but they never let it linger or manifest itself in a negative way.”
To ensure personal accountability, members of the team take an introspective look at each important workout. Like many programs, runners are asked to grade their performance. Unlike many programs, they are also asked to pick an MVP for the day. The message is clear, take care of your business, and support those around you. The collective bond created by exercises like this often translates to an inseperable and dangerous pack of Weymouth runners on the race course.
The team will continue their quest to repeat as Massachusetts Division 1 State Champions, and the early season results indicate they have the tools to do so. The Weymouth athletes take nothing for granted and realize the path to the top of the podium will be filled with obstacles. But there is no stronger structure in this world than family, and the Wildcats have a family that is 48 girls strong.
