A Freshman Leads the State
Dual meet season is underway and the state rankings are starting to take shape. Freshman sensation Nick Scott of Brookline jumped an astounding 21’0” to win the Long Jump in their dual meet against Braintree. He is now tied with Matt Bowers of King Phillip for the state lead. Scott also finished second in the 200; clocking in at 24.2.
This past week featured the debut of the Hockomock League dual meets and a showdown between Newton North and Weymouth. In the Hockomock Leauge, the Stoughton boys narrowly edged Foxboro by 2 points to open the season with a win, and in the Bay State League, the Newton North boys would need every inch of the 4x400m to hold off Weymouth by 8 points.
Peter Farlow (Needham) and Bo Lewis (Framingham) traded shots as both athletes attempted to win the maximum number of events for their teams. Farlow won the 110HH, the 400M, the HJ, and the Triple Jump. While Lewis won the 200M, the 400M, and the Long Jump. Needham would eventually pull away from Framingham for a 40 point win.
Lauren Ready of Lincoln-Sudbury would pick-up four wins in their meet against Newton South. Ready won the 100m (13.0), the 100H (15.2), the Long Jump (16’6”), and the Triple Jump (35’9”). Andrea Keklak (Lincoln-Sudbury) and Kathy O’Keefe avoided an early season showdown as Keklak won the 2 Mile (11:18.0) and O’Keefe won the Mile (5:18.9). Keklak also won the Javelin with a mark of 75’6”.
Notre Dame Academy of Hingham hosted the annual Notre Dame Cup and took home the championship by a huge margin. They finished the day with 134.5 points; followed by Notre Dame of Worcester with 45 points and Notre Dame of Tyngsboro with 6.5 points. The meet concluded with 22 teams taking to the line in the 4x400m Relay, and 18 of those teams were from NDA Hingham. It gives you an idea how incredibly popular track is at the school.
