Coaches Invite: Mah, Foley Fastest At Wrentham

With the championship season just beginning, Andrew Mah appears to be peaking at just the right time.

Just a week after breaking 15 minutes at the Bay State Championships, the Newton North senior was at his best once again at the Wrentham Developmental Center. In a dominating performance, Mah captured the Division 1 junior-senior race at the MSTCA Coaches invitational in a sizzling 15 minutes, 20.40 seconds. He was a minute ahead of second-place finisher Sam Cook of Metheun, who was timed in 16:20.40.

Mah is prepping for next week's showdown with St. John Prep's Tristan Shelgren in the Eastern Massachusetts Division  1 State Championships. Shelgren was originally slated to run Saturday's race.

The last time the two harriers faced each other was at the Frank Kelley Invitational where Shelgren beat Mah by 22 seconds with his winning time of 15:24.

"Shelgren's going to be really fast in that Division 1 race," Mah said. "I think it will be a good race. I am just going to race and see what happens.

Beverly's Ashley Foley copped the Div. 1 girls' race with a sub 19-minute clocking of 18:49.75. Finishing second was Newton North's Einat Gavish with a time of 18:53.96.

In the Division  2 Junior-Senior boys' race, Parker Charter's Nico Agosta pulled away from the top pack about a mile into race and won with a time of 16:14.37. Agosta was comfortably ahead of Stoneham's Jake Luongo, who was second at 16:25.62. Ipswich's Kellen Waters finished third in 16:25.79.

"Actually when I was going out (at the start), I didn't feel so great. I had something in my stomach," he said. "But once I got into a good rhythm I was fine and just kept a good pace. That last two miles was mostly just fear because I didn't no how far (Waters) was back so I just kept pushing it."
