Two Teams, Three Titles At Div. 5 State Relays

North Reading's girls' team slipped by Old Rochester by three points.

North Reading went home with a pair of team plaques from the MSTCA Division 5 State Relays.

Well, sort of.

While the girls were able to earn their crown solely with a narrow 38-35 victory over runner-up Old Rochester-Mattapoiset, the boys had to do a bit of sharing. The Hornets finished in a tie for first place with Oakmont Regional with each scoring 42 points. Taking third was Old Rochester with 39 points. 

In the girls' competition, North Reading won the long jump relay with a combined distance of 45 feet, 8.5 inches. The Lady Hornets also placed second in the 4x50-yard shuttle hurdle relay with a final time of 31.59 seconds. 

Oakmont scored nearly half its total with on a pair of runner-up placements.  The Spartans were second in the 4x200m relay, an event taken by Ashland in a meet record of 1:48.02.  Oakmont was also second in the 4x400m relay where it was edged at the finish by Austin Prep. Both teams registered identical times of 4:17.24.

Littleton, a third-place finisher in the meet with 32 points, established two meet records, winning the 4x800m meter relay at 9:56.35 and also taking gold in the distance medley with a 12:38.52 clocking.

The 50-yard shuttle relay proved to be the most competitive race of the day with five teams breaking the Div. 5 record. Newburyport took top honors with a time of 24.97.

North Reading grabbed a first and a pair of runner-up placements in their co-championship with Oakmont, which went home with two wins.

The Hornets combined for a distance of 118-4.25 to earn gold in the shot put relay. Oakmont claimed the 4x400m (3:39.11) and long jump (57-10.5) relays. Newburyport set a meet record of 10:51.15 to capture the DMR.
