Division 4 Relays: Milton Girls Save Best For Last

Milton sophomore Elise O'Leary anchored her team to a thrilling win in the 4x400m relay.

An exciting three days of track & field at the Reggie Lewis Center finished in a most appropriate way on Sunday.

In the day's final event of the afternoon, the girls' 4x400-meter relay, Milton High won the race and meet with a thrilling, come-from-behind victory.

The Wildcats went into the event a single point behind eventual second-place finisher Tewksbury. With one leg remaining in the relay, it didn't look good for Milton, which was sitting in fourth place, trailing front-running Tewksbury by at least five seconds. That's when the Wildcats' anchor, Elise O'Leary, went to work. The speedy sophomore caught everyone, including Tewksbury just before the final curve on the backstretch.

O'Leary unofficially split 57 seconds for her fantastic anchor, a leg that enabled Milton to squeaked out a 60-58 victory over the Lady Redmen.  Milton was timed in 4:08.35. Tewksbury crossed the line at 4:10.19.

MIlton's performance in the 4x400m highlighted a day that saw multiple thrillers and meets records at Reggie Lewis.

Seven teams were separated by .57 of a second in the boys' 4x200m, won by Holliston with a combined time of 1:35.07. Wakefield was second at 1:35.14 and placing third was Northampton in 1:35.21.

It was just a three-second margin between the top four teams in the boys' 4x800m, an event captured by Wakefield in 8:20.05 (US #10). Rounding out the next three finishers was Norton (second, 8:21.46), Burlington (third, 8:22.67) and Pentucket Regional (fourth, 8:23.04).

The Milton girls clocked the nation's eighth fastest time in the 4x800m relay with a meet record of 9:31.93. That time eclipsed the 2013 mark of 9:32.77 by Narragansett. The Wildcats also captured the distance medley relay in a nail-biter over runner-up Tewksbury. Milton finished at 12:41.18, while the Redmen were timed in 12:41.45.

In the girls' shot put relay, Dennis-Yarmouth broke a meet record of 110 feet, 1.25 inches, breaking the 2003 mark of 103-0 by Foxboro.

Other meet records were set by Melrose in the boys' DMR (10:40.20) and Burlington in the boys' high jump (18-3.75).

Placing fourth or better in seven of the 10 events, Burlington secured the boys' team title, defeating runner-up Wakefield, 50-37. Besides their record-breaking win in the high jump, the Red Devils also captured the 4x50 yard shuttle hurdle (27.66).
