Lopez Lomong: From Sudanese ‘Lost Boy’ to U.S. Olympian Stephen Lee Jul 12, 2012

Today's blog post comes from Lopez Lomong, who will be running with Team USA in the London 2012 Olympics. Lopez was born in South Sudan, and kidnapped by a rebel group at the age of 6. He escaped to a refugee camp in Kenya, and was adopted by a family in the United States. While Lopez runs for Team USA, he hasn't forgotten his home country of South Sudan, that celebrates one year of independence today. (via )

In the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics, LaShawn Merritt earned gold medals in the 400m and 400m relay. In the winter of 2009, he failed three drug tests. This summer, Merritt is competing in the London Olympics, trying to overcome preconceptions about his past.

LaFond Finishes 19th at World Juniors

BARCELONA, Spain - Thea LaFond, a rising sophomore at the University of Maryland, finished 19th in the women's triple jump qualifying rounds at the IAAF World Junior Championships.
 
LaFond had a mark of 41 feet, 6-1/2 inches in the qualifying rounds and did not move on as one of the top 12 athletes to the final. LaFond was competing for her native country of Dominica and qualified for the World Juniors after finishing second at the Central America, Carribean Championships.
 
She already ranks second on Maryland's all-time list in the women's triple jump. Her mark at the World Juniors was the fifth time she has gone better than 41 feet this season.

BARCELONA, Spain – It was another successful morning at Olympic Stadium for Team USA at the IAAF World Junior Championships in Barcelona. In three track event qualifying rounds, the U.S. advanced five of six to the next step while Team Co-Captain Gunnar Nixon continued his pursuit of the medal stand in the men’s decathlon.

Friday members of Team USA claimed a total of 22 medals, which included nine gold medals, during the opening day of the North America-Central America and Caribbean Under-23 (NACAC U-23) Championships in Guanajuato, Mexico. Competition continues Saturday and Sunday.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Shelbi Vaughan set an American Junior record in the women’s discus and Nikita Kirillov broke a 19-year-old meet record in the men’s pole vault to highlight competition on day one of USA Junior Track & Field Championships. The competition kicked off this afternoon in Bloomington, IN at Indiana University.
