Today at the World Jr. Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Barcelona, Spain, Cayla Hatton, the recent Phillips Andover Academy graduate and Farmington, Conn. native, established a New England High School record, finishing fourth in the 5,000 meters championship race. Hatton's time, 15:50.32, betters the previous New England record of 16:00.4, set by Dover, New Hampshire's Cathy Schiro at the Boston College Relays in '85. Schiro's record had stood for 27 years.Hatton now becomes the No. 2 all-time US High School performer in the event, trailing only Emily Sisson [Chesterfield, MO] who ran 15:48.91 in 2010. Sisson, a Providence College junior, finished 12th this year in the 5000 meters at the US Olympic Track and Field Trials earlier this month.The race was won by Ethiopia's Buze Diriba in 15:32.94, just one-thousand of a second ahead of her countrywoman Ruti Aga. Kenya's Agnes Jebet Tirop was thirdThis was Hatton's second New England record of the year. On March 31 she set the 10,000 meter mark with a clocking of 33:17.28 at the Tufts Snowflake Invitational. Hatton's time also establishes a new Eastern Track record for the event, according to Walt Murphy, editor and publisher of Eastern Track.
