Marathon Sports Presents: Athletes of the Week

Khary Bailey-Smith      Weymouth High School

This week's Athlete of the Week is Weymouth High's Khary Bailey-Smith, the first high jumper from Massachusetts to break 7'0" since Quincy's Jean Washington Morrisett in 2003. Bailey-Smith, who blasted onto the scene as a sophomore by shattering the Freshman-Sophomore Large Schools meet record (6'8"), will head off to UMass-Amherst on a football scholarship in the fall. The senior captain and 2011 All State Champion has had quite a season, jumping 6'11" at DI Relays in April, but ran out of jumps due to the 6 jump rule. Seven feet would have to wait, but only a few weeks, as the Andover Invite provided perfect weather and conditions. Bailey-Smith made 7 feet on his 2nd attempt, bringing the crowd to its feet, and earning the meet's Outstanding Male Performer.

Carla Forbes        Newton North High School

Vanessa Clerveaux had one of the greatest days in the history of the Coaches Meet, but when another athlete smashes two meet records in the same day, we have to honor them as Athlete of the Week.  Newton North’s Carla Forbes, who leaped to a pair of meet records on the day. Forbes bettered the 39-8-¼ set by Tammy Peeples in 1991 with a 40-10 effort. She capped her day with a win and 20-3 record that bettered Norwell’s Cristin Napier’s 18-8-¾ from 1993. “It was really just my last (long) jump,” said Forbes. “My others were in the high 18s and mid 18s. I was kind of behind on the board for all of those. I was pushing off slow. The last one I gave it all I had and was really aggressive.”  Forbes is also a key member of Newton North's 4x400 Meter Relay team.
