Dakota Dailey-Harris of La Salle Academy (RI) continues to improve on the Rhode Island state high jump record she set earlier in the season. This time, she cleared 5’8.5” to win the Rhode Island Class Championships and remains at US#3. Cherraine Davis of Southington High School (CT) increased her lead in the New England rankings to almost three feet with a 44’2” bomb at the Class LL Championships. She is currently ranked US#9 and is one of only two athletes to have a mark over 40 feet this season. Isabella Stuopis of Souhegan (NH) joins her in that elite club at 41’0.25”. Marika Crowe (Lincoln-Sudbury, MA) emerged from deep in the rankings to take over the #2 spot in the region with her 2:57.68 clocking in the 1000m at the Dual County League Championships. Sarah Gillespie of Northwest Catholic (CT) remains at NE#1 with a 2:55.11, but Crowe is the reigning Massachusetts outdoor mile champion and comes from a program with a knack for producing outstanding middle distance runners. The pair will have plenty of company as we march towards the New England Championships. Eight girls have run under three minutes and fourteen are on the bubble. Mike Marsella (Chariho, RI) is now NE#3 in the mile after a gutsy race and big kick at the Millrose Games in New York. Marsella finished second on Saturday in 4:14.68 and was joined by soon to be University of Virginia teammate Connor Rog (Fairfield Prep, CT) who finished 7th in 4:19.66 (NE#10). Jake Scinto of Cheshire High School (CT) is starting to make a very familiar post-season run in the long jump. The 2011 New England Indoor Champion in the event won the Class LL Championships at 22’7” and is now tied with Eddie Uthman of West Warwick (RI) for the top spot in New England. Eight athletes have jumped over 22 feet this season and there appears to be plenty of depth to challenge the pair. Colin Hoey of Lowell High School (MA) posted a massive improvement in the shot put to take over the top spot in that event. It was confirmed with his coach that Hoey went from just under 49 feet to 56’3.5” after switching back from a spin technique to a more familiar glide technique at the Merrimack Valley Conference Championships. Also moving up the rankings was Swardic Mayanja of Newton North High School (MA) who launched a MA#3 throw of 55’6.25” to win the Bay State League meet. |
