A Compulsive Desire for Greatness

“When you want to succeed as bad as you want to breathe, then you’ll be successful.”

If you have ever had the pleasure of meeting any of the track and field greats you will notice that they all exhibit one common trait; a compulsive desire to be successful.  The same can be said about the greats of any industry, but in sports it plays-out in the public eye.

Success is often the result of an unwavering passion for one’s craft, coupled with the acceptance of nothing less than perfection.  Those that experience longevity at the top are happy with their performances, yet never satisfied.  Their drive is internal, and motivation is unwavering.  They have moments of doubt - just like the rest of us mere mortals – but the pure joy of success outweighs the fear of failure every time.

The video below is so well done that it really needs no introduction.  Swampscott coach Jeff Bartlett introduced us to this wonderful piece of motivation earlier in the week and it warrants sharing.  Although the subject of the film is a football player, the message is impactful and universal.  Anybody who has sacrificed to achieve can put themselves in his shoes, and all of us have been confronted by the crossroads of success and failure.

Do yourself a favor and watch the entire clip. Then save it for the next time there is a blizzard outside and you are contemplating skipping your workout.  Enjoy!
