Senior Top 10
As expected, the senior class is at the top of the heap when it comes to the Massachusetts rankings. But this group of talented athletes did not stop there. Six members of the class of 2011 have earned the honor of being ranked in the top 10 nationally; indicating the immense quality of performances posted this season.
Each of the athletes listed below deserves special recognition for the tremendous accomplishments they achieved this season, and a brief summary certainly does not do them justice. You can read stories from this season, view their profile, and see current stats by clicking on the desired name.
- Andrea Keklak (Lincoln-Sudbury) – US#3 for 800m at 2:06.39
- Kyle Quinn (Somerset) – US#8 in the javelin at 209’11”
- Shayne Collins (Mansfield) – US#7 for 5,000m at 14:39.83
- Nadia Eke (Holy Name) – US#4 in the triple jump at 41’9.5”
- John Murray (Shrewsbury) – US#10 for 5,000m at 14:49.71
- Moira Cronin (Andover) – US#5 in the high jump at 5’10”
Beyond the national rankings, several Massachusetts seniors thrived at the local and regional level. Courtney Williams ended the season with a three week winning streak in the shot put. The New Bedford star won the MIAA Division 1 Championships, the All-State Championships, and the New England Championships. Williams boasts a season best of 43’0.75”. On the boys’ side, Tresley Dupont of Durfee took advantage of a very close competitive field in the shot put and used the added pressure to fuel a state championship and a new personal best of 55’9”. Dupont capped his season with a second place finish in at the New England Championships.
The girls 2 mile features an athlete that is arguably the best distance runner in the state. Unfortunately, most track fans in Massachusetts do not get to see her race. Marissa Shoji attends Noble and Greenough in Dedham and is part of the NEPSTA schools that do not compete in MIAA events. Shoji spends most of her season competing at open events and has posted a US#8 time of 16:59.07 in the 5,000m, a state leading time of 10:37.61 in the 2 mile, and a US#16 time of 4:33.68 in the 1500m. She is a fixture at the New Balance Nationals and was the top Massachusetts finisher in the 5,000m and the 2 mile.
In the hurdles, two Massachusetts All-State Champions excelled at the New England Championships. Josh Quinnie of Attleboro finished 3rd in the 110m hurdles and Chris Pullerits of Acton-Boxborough finished 2nd in the 300m hurdles. Quinnie leads the state in the 110m hurdles at 14.30, and Pullerits is ranked second in the 400m hurdles at 54.29.
The sprints were just as impressive, with Brett Buskey of Blackstone-Millville winning the Massachusetts All-State Championships and the New England Championships in the 100m. Buskey was one of only two athletes to run under 11 seconds at the New England Championships on a very cold and rainy day in Burlington, Vermont.
