Massachusetts All-State Championships
Highlights
- The Newton North girls won a close one over Andover by 4 points, and the Mansfield boys got out to a big lead early to finish with a 20 point win over Acton-Boxborough.
- Cory Ryan of Norwood won the 200m in 24.95. She is now tied with Selena Yates of Holyoke for the #1 time in the state. Yates finished second in 24.98.
- Marika Crowe of Lincoln-Sudbury won the mile in 5:00.43; just behind teammate Andrea Keklak's MA#1 time of 5:00.41. Keklak won the 800m in 2:10.41, and the pair would help lead Lincoln-Sudbury to a 4x800m win in 9:16.11 (just off the meet record of 9:15.13).
- Katie Carlson of Wachusett skipped graduation to race the 2 mile. Unfortunately, she lost her shoe mid race and would finish 4th (11:03.41) with a very painful and bloody foot. Catarina Rocha of Peabody earned the win (10:54.47) and Viviana Hanley of Bishop Feehan was second (10:59.71). This is the second time this year the pair has run under 11 minutes.
- Vanessa Clerveaux of Brockton set a new meet record in the 100m hurdles. She won the event in 14.25 and pushed three other girls to sub 15 second times.
- Alex Stanton of Medfield and Jen Esposito of Mansfield both ran under the meet record of 61.21 in the 400m hurdles. Stanton got the win in 59.52 with Esposito finishing second in 61.14.
- Brockton remains atop the state rankings after winning the 4x100m in 48.62.
- Andover needed every inch of the 4x400m relay to secure the win over Wellesley, Lexington, Northampton, and Mansfield. They remain MA#1 with their winning time of 3:57.24.
- Moira Cronin of Andover didn't get a meet record in the high jump, but she took three very good attempts at it. She won the event at 5'8" and was followed by Amy Collins of Wachusett and Kristen McDonagh of Mansfield at 5'4".
- Nadia Eke of Holy Name was the only jumper over 40 feet in the triple jump and won the event failry easily over Carla Forbes of Newton North at 41'6". The same was not true for the long jump. Eke did win the event (18'11.25"), but she needed the very last jump to edge Nicole Gilbert of Hanover by an inch.
- Meghan McHugh of North Attleboro won the javelin with a MA#1 and US#17 throw of 141'02".
- Courtney Williams of New Bedford is in a class of her own. She won the shot put by almost 5 feet at 43'00.75".
- Brett Buskey of Blackstone-Millville ran a MA#1 time of 10.80 to win the 100m.
- Ian Peuser of Rockland won the 200m in a MA#1 time of 21.85. He is the only athlete in the state to post a fully automatic time under 22 seconds.
- Nathan Pierre-Louis of Waltham avenged last week's loss to Isiah Penn by winning the 400m in 48.48. Six athletes would run under 50 seconds, including Nick King and Griffin Robertson from Mansfield, and Andre Rolim of Somerville. Rolim would post his time from the first section.
- Josh Lampron of Mansfield won the 800m but it wasn't easy. His winning time of 1:54.03 was less than a second faster than Nick Capezzuto of North Reading (1:54.95).
- The pack stayed intact until the final 75 meters of the mile when Wes Gallagher of Pembroke pressed down the home stretch to fight off Mike Giardina of Lowell. They would finish in 4:19.24 and 4:19.71 respectively. Joel Hubbard of Marshfield finished 3rd overall at 4:20.06 but he posted his time in the first section.
- The 2 mile was a great race, but it was certainly not what we all expected. Chris Allen of King Philip would lead a large pack at the 800m mark in 2:15. Shayne Collins of Mansfield took over at that point and split 4:30 for the mile. Sensing the race was up for grabs, Kieran Kinnare of Ipswich seized the opportunity and forced another lead change. He would press the pace for a small portion before Collins and Allen caused a small pack break with 600m to go. Collins would get the win with a new MA#1 time of 9:07.42 and Allen would finish second in 9:09.46. John Murray of Shrewsbury finished 3rd (9:17.34) but never looked comfortable.
- Josh Quinnie of Attleboro won the 110m hurdles in 14.55 with Matt Hunter of Lexington finishing second in 14.90. Terrance Gibson of Rockland clipped a hurdle in the preliminary rounds and finished the race holding his hip in pain. He unfortunately would not qualify for the finals.
- Chris Pullerits of Acton-Boxborough won the 400m hurdles in a MA#2 time of 54.29. He was followd by Peter Farlow of Needham (54.67) and Jacob Teixeira of Seekonk (55.10). Jair Cruikshank, who has the #1 time in the state at 54.23, hit a hurdle coming out of the final corner and went down to the track hard. He would not finish the race but would eventually walk off the track under his own power after being evaluated by the medical staff.
- The boys 4x800m may have been the race of the night with all five of the major contenders together at the bell lap. Wachusett would break free of the group in the final steps to win the event in 7:53.00. They were followed by Andover (7:53.75) and Acton-Boxborough (7:54.56).
- Andover won the 4x100m with a MA#1 time of 42.51.
- Mansfield was just too strong for the rest of the field in the 4x400m. They won the event in a MA#1 time of 3:20.02.
- Khary Bailey-Smith of Weymoth and Carl Joseph of Brockton went to battle again in the high jump. Both would finish with 6'8' clearances, but Bailey-Smith would get the win based on misses.
- Brendan Sullivan of Westford Academy set a new meet record of 15'0" in the pole vault. Cam Walsh of Central Catholic was second at 14'6".
- Olisa Obiefuna of Saugus was a double winner; taking the title in the long jump (23'3") and the triple jump (45'4.5").
- Brian Sullivan of Hingham improved on his MA#1 mark in the discus of 161'5" by winning the event in 167'10". Matt Thompson of Clinton was second with a MA#2 mark of 161'2".
- Kyle Quinn of Somerset broke his own meet record in the javelin with his winning throw of 209'11". He is now US#7. Anthony Fodera, Alex Estrella, and Richard Sterndale would all throw over 180 feet.
- Tresley Dupont of Durfee held off Sean Enos and Swardiq Mayanja to win the shot put at 55'7.25.
