David Melly of Newton South has been on a tear the past two weeks. Last Sunday he won the B.A.A. Invitational Mile, and this week he posted the #1 time in the state for the mile and the #3 time in the state for the two mile. The best part is, he did it in the same meet. Melly won the mile in 4:22 and then went on to win the 2 mile in 9:48 against a very strong Acton-Boxboro team.
Melly’s strong pace in the mile helped pull sophomore James Sullivan of Acton-Boxboro to a very impressive second place time of 4:30. But Sullivan was not the only sophomore distance runner who was testing his limits this week. Evan Grandfield of Bishop Feehan won the mile (4:42.3) and the 2 mile (9:57.5) in their meet against Attleboro, and he appears to be getting progressively more comfortable with taking over the lead. If these two emerging stars continue to develop, we may see another distance rivalry similar to that of Shayne Collins and John Murray in two years.
Last Saturday, Taelour Murphy of Triton Regional won the Red Raider Invitational in a MA#3 time of 12.67. But the performance is even more impressive than the state ranking would indicate because it’s one of the very few fully automatic 100m times run in the state thus far. The larger events that use automatic timing systems kick-off this weekend and it will be interesting to see how Murphy’s time holds-up when human error is removed from the equation. To put it in perspective, Murphy is already ahead of the 12.73 she ran at the 2010 MIAA All State Championships; a time that earned her 8th place.
In the field, Holly Lanchantin of Natick launched a MA#1 discus throw of 116’9” to win the event against Braintree. Her mark is 7 feet ahead of MA#2 Tatiana Froehlich of Newton North and almost 10 feet ahead of MA#3 Kristina Moran of Bishop Fenwick.
