Leaving a Legacy
Senioritis, as defined by UrbanDictionary.com, is "a crippling disease that strikes high school seniors. Symptoms include: laziness, an over-excessive wearing of track pants, old athletic shirts, sweatpants, athletic shorts, and sweatshirts. Also features a lack of studying, repeated absences, and a generally dismissive attitude. The only known cure is a phenomenon known as Graduation."
The dreaded “senioritis” rears its ugly head at this time of year and we usually see a significant drop in the overall depth of performances from those focused on graduation. Thankfully, this debilitating “disease” does not strike all seniors, and track athletes tend to have a higher immunity when compared to their peers.
This senior class appears to be less concerned with planning graduation parties, and more concerned with leaving a legacy. In fact, many of them can be credited with changing the competitive nature of the sport in Massachusetts. That may sound like an outrageous claim given the pedigree of track and field in the state, but athletes like Andrea Keklak and Greg Boursiquot can’t help but impose their will on the rest of the field. Athletes who were fortunate enough to line-up next to Keklak and Boursiquot were forced into a difficult decision; raise your performance expectations, or be content with a distant second place.
To the credit of this year’s seniors, the perception of what was a good performance changed dramatically. The bar was raised for the entire state, and we watched events become so fiercely competitive that only nationally ranked performances had a chance at the podium. In the 600M, the top 12 senior girls ran MileSplit Elite times, and it took 1:38.5 or better to make the top 10. On the boys’ side, 16 seniors posted MileSplit Elite times, and an athlete had to run under 1:25.00 to make the top 20!
The 1000M and the 2 Mile also experienced unprecedented depth, and the seniors have left some very big shoes to fill. As they prepare for their final competitive season in high school, and subsequently the next stage of their life, they can take solace in the fact that their legacy will have a lasting positive impact.
