Massachusetts Elite List: Top 10 Sophomores

The Rivalry

     The sophomores provided a rivalry that we will hopefully enjoy for years to come.  Andre Rolim of Summerville and Biran Sommers of Acton-Boxboro anchor two of the best 4x400 Meter Relay teams in the state, and because of the hard work of their teammates, the pair would often find themselves side-by-side at the final exchange.  Sommers holds the #1 time for sophomores in the 300M (38.89), while Rolim holds the #1 time in the state for the 600M (1:20.75).  It’s the classic battle of strength vs. speed, and the show never disappointed those die-hard track fans that insist on watching every last second of a meet. 

 

     By far, the group with the most depth is the female 600M runners.  Eight have posted MileSplit First Team Elite times of 1:39.5 or faster, and four of have run under 1:38.00!  Mia Toffoli of Northampton leads the way with a season best of 1:35.08.  She is followed by Camila Isern of Lexington at 1:36.09 and Amy Collins of Wachusett at 1:36.39.

 

     No rankings conversation would be complete without mentioning the 2011 Long Jump National Champion Carla Forbes of Newton North.  Forbes tops the sophomore list in the 55M, the 55M Hurdles, the Long Jump, and would also top the Triple Jump if we included events that were not contested at the state championships.  She is clearly one of the most impressive athletes we have seen in years.

 

     But the list is not limited to just a handful of athletes.  Patrick Coppinger, Lauren Hagen, Catarina Rocha, Emily Cahill, and Abigail Pohl are just a few of the other extremely talented sophomores that should continue to impact the state rankings for the next couple of years.
