Week #4 Summary
Week #4 brought us a blizzard and a flurry. The blizzard was literal, shutting down several dual meets and forcing the rescheduling of the Boston Holiday Challenge. The flurry was figurative, as we watched dozens of MileSplit National Elite marks get posted in a 48 hour period. Both added excitement to a week that is typically dominated by the holidays. We should have know that a little snow storm would not keep Massachusetts’ track athletes at home.
This week also brought us the much anticipated return of John Murray (Shrewsbury) and Catarina Rocha (Peabody) following their impressive performances at the Foot Locker National Cross Country Championships. John opened his indoor season in the 2 mile at the Boston Holiday Challenge with a national leading time of 9:25.03 and then came back 5 days later to run 4:17.93 in the mile at the BU Mini Meet. Catarina took a more conservative approach to her return by cruising to a 5:23 mile in their dual meet against Swampscott. Impressive opening times, but the rest of the distance runners in the state decided to send a very timely message; welcome back……you have company.
Andrea Keklak (Lincoln-Sudbury) traveled down to Rhode Island to take on a stacked field in the Rhode Island Classic. Unfortunately, her time of 5:05.18 in the mile was only good enough for 3rd. Lindsay Crevoiserat of Glastonbury High School, CT was the winner in 4:56.26.
The Mansfield team had a huge week in both genders. Jen Esposito now leads the nation in the 400m with a time of 56.62 and also leads the state in the 600m with a time of 1:35.99. Not to be outdone, Nick King now leads the nation following his 50.15 second effort in the 400m at the BU Mini Meet. In addition, distance runners Josh Lampron and Shayne Collins demonstrated why their cross country team was one of the best in the state. Josh ran 4:28.87 for the mile at the Boston Holiday Challenge and 1:55.32 for the 800m at the BU Mini Meet, while Shayne ran a 4:29.44 mile at the Boston Holiday Challenge and 4:18.65 mile at the BU Mini Meet.
The high jumpers seem to be getting their legs back as a showdown appears to be brewing in the Hockomock League. Tristan Richardson (North Attleboro) jumped 6’5” in a dual meet against Attleboro while league rival Matt Sydney’s (Canton) jump of 6’7” at the Boston Holiday Challenge may be the best second place jump we see all year. Unfortunately, Matt lost to Innocent Jacob of Chariho Regional High School, RI who soared to 6’11” for the win and the national lead.
