Oliver Fried of Dover Sherborn Regional High School with a first place performance in the Boys One Mile at the MIAA Division 5 Championships. Fried ran a time of 4:26.10 in his winning performance. Video by Jason Byrne.
Our top two Eastern Division 5 boys, Oliver Fried of Dover Sherborn Regional High School (15:41.40) and Sean Kay of Arlington Catholic High School (15:55.80), are both sub 16:00 5k runners. The third Eastern Division 5 boy returner, Andrew Cabral of Seekonk High School, came close to getting into the 15:00s for the 5k with a personal record in 2018 of 16:00.00 at the Bob McIntyre Twilight Invitational.
Fried enjoyed a successful Senior year, including a second place finish in the One Mile at the Massachusetts (MIAA) All-State Outdoor Championship with a time of 4:17.83. Fried also has established himself as one of Massachusetts top XC runners having already dipped into the mid 15:00s for the 5k. If Fried can pick off where he left off this upcoming season, he is going to be hard to beat in Eastern Division 5 section.
Sean Kay and Andrew Cabral are two tough competitors that are going to be chasing Fried, however. Kay turned heads during the 2019 Indoor Track & Field season with his Two Mile victory at the MIAA Division 5 Championships where he dropped a 9:32.95. Cabral ran a similarly impressive Two Mile personal record where he ran a 9:37.23 at the MSTCA Invitational on May 11th. Cabral still has two more seasons of high school running as well, heading into his Junior year this year, and is one to keep an eye out for this season.
Rounding out our top 5 Eastern Division 5 returners is another Seekonk High School runner, Henry Jordan (5k PR of 16:26.00), and Pentucket Regional Senior High School's Peter Lopata (5k PR of 16:32.60). Jordan was most successful in the 800 meter dash this past track season with a personal best of 2:00.13. Lopata on the other hand, impressed most in the One Mile where he ran a 4:18.01 at the MIAA Eastern Division 4 Championships.
