This time it was Kelsey Chmiel (Saratoga Springs, NY) that broke the tape at the end.
In a rematch of her duel with Gabrielle Wilkinson (Friends Central, PA) from last week's Millrose Games, Chmiel got the best of her rival Saturday in the Junior Mile of the New Balance Grand Prix. The gifted junior put in one final burst at she reached the final straightaway and cruised to a winning time of 4 minutes, 44.84 seconds. Wilkinson placed second in 4:46.95, while Nikki Merrill (Portsmouth, RI) took third at 4:50.87. Grace Connolly (Natick, MA) was fourth overall in 4:51.28.
Dalton Hengst, the recent Bishop Shanahan (PA) transfer, captured the boys' Junior Mile with a personal best of 4:10.57. Hengst held back with the chase pack until there was just 100m left, blasting past front-running Ryan Oosting (Arlington, MA) to take the win. Cole Johnson (Rockford, MI) secured runner-up honors at 4:11.25. Oosting placed third with a PB of 4:11.78.
