Record-Breaking Day At Coaches Invite!


Meet records fell in abundance at the MSTCA Coaches Invitational Large School meet with seven broken inside the Reggie Lewis Center on Sunday.

Needham's Davonte Burnett was the recipient of two of those marks. The speedy senior clocked state-leaders in both the 55- and 300-meter dashes. Burnett was timed in 6.34 for the short sprint and nearly broke 35 seconds in the longer race with a winning time of 34.16, just a few strides ahead of runner-up Phillips Magre of Somerville, who crossed the line in 34.44. Burnett also anchored his team's winning 4x400 relay, which was timed in 3:27.78.

Acton -Boxborough's Adam Yang was also a double-winner. He established a new meet record in the long jump with a leap of 23 feet, 1.25 inches, his first time over the 23-foot barrier. Yang also won the 55m hurdles where he was timed in 7.77. 

Ryan Oosting of Arlington turned the seeded boys' mile into his own personal time trial. Oosting broke from the lead pack after just 600 meters and cruised to a meet record of 4:14.98. That effort broke the 2002 record of 4:17.17 by Newton North's Chris Barnicle.

Oosting hit the 800m mark at 2:07 and ran his final 400m in 62 seconds! 

Shannon Parks had a breakthrough performance in the girls' shot put with a state No. 1 and meet record of 42-6.25, a personal best by more than four feet! Brockton's Julieth Nwosu was second with a strong 39-2 heave. In the boys' shot, Tom Aicardi took individual honors with a distance of 52-11. Hayden Dillow of Xaverian Brothers was second at 50-1.5. 
Lincoln-Sudbury captured the boys' 4x800m relay with a state-leading, meet-record time of 7:59.05. Newton North took second in 8:16.59. Finishing third was Peabody at 8:17.79. 
Fitchburg, the state-leader in the 4x200m, maintained its top status with a meet record of 1:31.05. The Red Raiders held off Somerville, which was second in 1:31.74.

St. John's Prep's Tristan Shelgren traded lading duties with Newton North's Andrew Mah during the early stages of the two mile run. Shelgren broke away with more than a half mile remaining to win with a season best of 9:18.63. Brookline's Lucas Aramburu was second at 9:29.82. St. John's Joshua Rahn was third in 9:30.34. Mah took fourth in 9:34.64. 

Newton North's Theo Burba clocked the state's fastest time for the boys' 600m, winning with a season best of 1:21.12. Burba was involved in a close race with Thomas Lingard, breaking away from the Lexington senior on the final lap. Lingard secured second at 1:22.22. 

Andover's Julianna Kennedy earned the victory in the girls' 600m, breaking the tape in 1:36.40. Finishing second was Fitchburg's Hannah Neilon, who was timed in 1:37.48. The top six runners in the field broke 1:40. 

Sophomore Nicole Anderson of Billerica was a few strides from cracking three minutes in the 1,000m with a winning time of 3:00.84. Anderson was a comfortable 15 meters ahead of runner-up Paige Edwards of Natick, who finished at 3:03.48. Algonquin's Tess Reyes was third at 3:03.99.

Tyler Griffin of Saint John's captured the boys' 1,000m with a winning time of 2:32.78. John Mieszanski of Chelmsford was second in 2:33.75. 

Springfield Central's Kyla Hill won a tight race in the girls' 55m dash. The junior standout won with a state-leading 7.20. Natick's Rachel Parker and Wachusett's Victoria Steffon were second and third, respectively, with identical times of 7.24.

Newton South dominated the girls' distance races with sophomore Lucy Jenks capturing the mile by nearly five seconds with a time of 5:07.63 and teammate Caroline Barry almost 20 seconds with a winning 11:10.72 effort.  

Wellesley's Abby Comella won a highly-competitive 300m race with a winning time of 40.25. She beat teammate Anna Jordahl-Henry, who was second in 40.52. In all, five dipped under 41 seconds.

Hingham's Zoe Dainton matched her all-time best in the high jump with a leap of 5-8. Belmont's Arioush Krafian was second at 5-4. Westford's Jacki Harding and Wachusett's Sara James tied for third, both clearing 5-4.
