While our Division 4 and Division 5 squads were occupying Reggie Lewis this past weekend for the State Relays, a few of our athletes were doing some damage at a few out-of-state competitions.
The biggest noise came from the Yale Track Classic in New Haven, Conn., where Acton-Boxborough's Samantha Friborg clocked the nation's fastest time for the 800-meter run. Friborg, last year's Division 1 600m champion, dominated the field inside Coxe Cage on Saturday with an indoor best of 2 minutes, 10.26 seconds. The next finisher across the line was Erin McGill of Glastonbury (CT), who was a distant second at 2:15.30.
The Bay State also had a champion in the 400m run. Somerville's Phillip Magre captured the event with a fast 48.97 clocking (US #22). Brockton's Lincoln Sena was ninth overall in 51.09. Magre also placed third in the high jump with a leap of 6 feet, 5 inches, a height that's not only an indoor PR but ties for No. 3 statewide.
In the boys' DMR, Woburn and Marshfield ran the state's second and third fastest times, respectively, with times of 10:36.78 and 10:37.45.
About 70 miles away in New York City, Tristan Shelgren of St. John's Prep finished second in the invitational mile at the New Balance Games where he was timed in 4:18.58. Peter Diebold of Weston was seventh overall in the 500m with a 1:06.50 clocking.
Newton North's Theo Burba traveled to the University of Lehigh track facility in Virginia where he competed in the VA Showcase. Burba was second in the Invitational 800m where he finished at 1:56.42. The race was won by Jonah Hoey of Bishop Shanahan (PA) with a time of 1:56.11.
