Michael "Mr. Cross Country" Mahon, left, standing alongside Bishop Feehan coach Bob L'Homme and his former mentor Jesse Armell on Wednesday afternoon.
Not too long after graduating from Keefe Tech in the early 1980s where he was a track and cross-country runner, Michael Mahon followed his passion and has been one of the state's biggest supporters, attending a multitude of meets each year.
He hasn't stopped.
The legendary Mahon, aptly dubbed "Mr. Cross Country", was at his 1,700 career X-C meet on Wednesday. He hit that milestone at Bishop Feehan High during the Shamrocks' league meet with Coyle Cassidy.
What made the day even more special for Mahon, who has been a regular fixture at cross-country meets for the last 33 years, is he was reunited with his former teacher from the Brandon School in Petersham, Jesse Armell. The two have not met each other in 40 years. Mahon awarded Armell at the meet with his Lifelong Achievement Award.
To put Mahon's milestone into perspective - It works out to more than 50 meets per season! Now that's impressive.
MileSplit MA congratulates Michael on reaching his most recent milestone. Three hundred more to go until No. 2,000!!!
