Jack Carleo utilized a patient approach in the 800-meter run at Saturday's Weston Twilight Invitational. It proved to beneficial in the outcome for the Newburyport senior.
In a field that included more than a dozen sub two-minute runners, Carleo held back until a little more than 200m remaining. With a burst on the backstretch, he pulled away from his rivals and won by two seconds with a state-leading time of 1:54.96. Finishing second was Shawn Carlson of Bishop Fenwick in 1:56.99.
Clare Martin of Newton South was a double-winner in the popular nighttime event, held at Regis College. Martin established a state record of 6:46.33 in the 2,000m steeplechase. With about an hour rest, she came back and captured the 800m with a state best of 2:13.21. Four other runners cracked 2:20, including Hopkinton's Isabelle Giordana (second, 2:15.36), Natick's Kelsey Walak (third, 2:18.35) and Milton's Colette O'Leary (fourth, 2:19.20).
Northampton's Nikolas Smith captured the 400m with a time of 50.28. Taking second was talented freshman Peter Diebold of host Weston in 50.98. Smith also lent his footspeed in his team's winning 4x200m relay, which clocked a fast time of 1:29.95.
In the girls' one mile, Margaret Donahue slipped by front-runner Bridget Mitchell of Milton with less than 10m left to take the event with a time of 4:59.55. Mitchell crossed the line in 4:59.97. After a slow 70-second first 400m, Benjamin Matejka took charge late in the race to win the boys' mile in a respectable 4:22.67 clocking.
Newton South's Calene Lazare set a meet record of 12.08 to take the girls' 100m dash.
Amherst-Pelham captured the Sprint Medley Relay by a convincing five-second margin, combining for a time of 3:32.52 (US #26), Finishing second was Belmont at 3:37.99. Newton North was third at 3:38.10. In the girls' SMR, Gloucester took the title with a time of 4:24.22. Lexington was the runner-up in 4:25.06.
Melrose was first in the boys' distance medley with a strong time of 10:33.63.
Wellesley's Erica Blackett-Thomas put herself atop the state rankings in the girls' high jump with a leap of 5 feet, 5 inches.
The two-mile races also featured state-leaders with Holyoke's Cameron Correia winning the boys' race in 9:22.43 and Concord-Carlisle's Margot Ehrenthal earning the girls' crown with a time of 11:00.08.
