MIAA D4: Wyman Sets 2 Mile Mark !

As the finish line gets a little crowded with lapped runners, Wyman and Mahoney battled it out right to the end.

Old Rochester's Mike Wyman put his sensational finishing speed to good use, passing Matt Mahoney of Swampscott with 350 meters to go in the 2 mile and roaring across the finish line in a meet-record time of 9:11.39. Mahoney was also under the long-standing mark of 9:14.9 set by Mike Bissonnette of Coyle-Cassidy in 1973 with his 9:11.83.

Despite the new record, Wyman said he felt a little sluggish in the 2 mile and opted to sit on Mahoney the second mile and kicking rather than making a strong run for home over last four laps.  Wyman was the class of the 800 field as well as he bided his time for 400 meters before pushing hard with 200 left to complete his double in 1:56.88.
"I was a little disappointed in my time (in the 2 mile)," said Wyman. "I was hoping for a little faster. I wasn't really feeling it. I felt a lot better in the 800. I had more spring."

Piccolo led from the gun in the 400 hurdles on the way to an easy victory in a controlled 64.63 seconds in the morning on the Durfee High track and pulled away over the final 100 meters to take the 400 in 58.39. Piccolo closed out her day with third place in the 800 in 2:25.26.

"I'm a little tired," Piccolo said. "I triple in all my meets so today is no different. I don't have a lot of rest between the last two events. I'm not going for (personal bests) today but definitely next week. The 400 went ok. I think I could have gotten a better time but I was saving a little something for the 800."

Evandro DaCosta of Randolph established himself as a strong contender head into the all-state meet in the jumping events. He  captured the long jump at 21-1 and got off a leap of 44-4 to take the triple jump.

David Bergin won the 110 hurdles in 15.16 to lead Stoneham to the boys title with 59 points, edging out Old Rochester's 57 points. Cole Godzinski won the 100 hurdles (15.38), Nicole Roberts sprinted to victory in the 2 mile (11:23.62) and Emily Murray won the shot put with a heave of 29-6-1/2 to lead North Reading to the girls team title with 81.5 points. Norwell was second with 61 points and picked up individual wins by Morgan Gallagher in the 200 (25.67) and Danielle Griffin in the triple jump (34-8-3/4).
