TRI VALLEY LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIPS

By Ted Kimball

Tuesday afternoon school buses converged at McCarthy Park bringing hundreds of cross country racers to the TVL League meet in Medfield.   The varsity girls’ competition was tight throughout the race between the Dover-Sherborn and Hopkinton teams.  In the end DS placed three in the top ten with Michelle Alessandro and Julia Pearson first and second respectively, and Cayla Condon in the seventh spot, all finishing the hilly course in under 20 minutes.  Hopkinton though finished five in the top ten, with Shelby Arden, MaryKate Cavanaugh, Mary-Paule Monks, Lauren Hazzard, and Melissa Lodge scoring a team low of 26 points giving the Hillers first place team honors.  DS was second with 46, while Holliston came in third with 97 in the team ranking.  Holliston’s Katie Salley and Lydia Heely of Medway rounded out the top ten finishers.

The boys’ varsity race started as many expected with a quick five-minute first mile over the punishing trail.  Ian and Sean Robertson lead as they had for each of their league meets this season, while Trevor Christolini of Dover-Sherborn was surrounded by light-blue clad Warriors of Medfield from start to finish.  In the end Sean and Ian Robertson took the top two spots, with teammates Austin Scola and Andrew Robartes finishing in third and fifth, all posting times under the 17-minute mark.  Christolini placed fourth with Raider teammate Dylan Baroody coming in ninth.  Billy Sullivan from Norton finished sixth in the race, which saw the Lancers place second overall with a score of 71 in front of the Dover Sherborn boys with 76. Jake Lester’s fifteenth place finish rounded out the Medfield Warriors’ top five, scoring a first place low of 26 for the team competition.

The JV Mixed 5k was a showcase of Hopkinton’s emerging power, with Alex Joyce winning the contest as the first of seven Hillers finishing in the top nine, with Charlie Andes from Medfield coming in second .  The event list for the day started with the Freshman mixed race, showing off great prospects for coming years in the league!   Ryan Hunter of Westwood took top honors in the 2.2 mile contest with a time of 12:57.85.  In second was Alex Mariona from  Ashland, while Medfield’s Mark Nevins came in third.
