How many years have you coached high school track/XC?

I have been coaching Track&Field for 12 years (12 seasons outdoor, 7 seasons indoor) I have been coaching Cross Country for 7 seasons.

How many athletes are on your track/XC team?

There are about 35 ladies and 30 boys on the track teams.  There are about 15 ladies and 25 boys on the XC teams.

Do you coach any other sports?

I coach my son’s T-ball and soccer teams.

Did you run track/XC in High School?

If so, what events? Where?  I was on the Track & Field team in the spring.  I ran  the 400m and 800m.  Plus, I did triple jump and high jump. I never ran high school XC.  I played soccer instead.

Did you run track/XC in college? If so, what events? Where?

No running for me in college.  I played soccer for one season.

Did you have a coach that inspired you in high school?

Coach Dunn would run some of the workouts with us.  I remember this.  He would push us to go faster during training.  I am sure this is a big part of why we were so successful in high school.

What is your favorite coaching moment? Can’t pick just one, feel free to list a few!

  • The Spring Track & Field league championship meet, 2010 was in the dark, under the lights and in the pouring rain.  I will never forget watching my freshman miler take 16 seconds off her PR.  She didn’t run that fast again until her senior year, when she took another 13 seconds off her best.

  • Spring track 2003, when a senior failed to meet his 4-year goal of breaking 14:00 in the 2 mile run, we held a special track meet, just for him.  We had only one race, the 2 mile, with only one runner.  The whole team stopped what they were doing and lined the entire track, cheering him on for 8 laps.  He beat his 14:00 goal that day.

  • Cross Country, 2012, when my top runner set the school record on our home XC course.  We set it as a goal at the end of the previous season and he did it at the last home meet.

  • When I ran in the Cape Cod Marathon, 2010, a bunch of ladies from the XC team came down to watch, cheering and holding signs with a phrase I say to them all the time, “I believe in you”.

What piece of advice do you give an athlete having a bad day to inspire them?

“I believe in you.”  Also, I remind my athletes that there is no such thing as a bad day of running.

What is your favorite race to either watch or run?

My favorite race to run is the Walt Disney World Marathon.  I ran it in 2011 and 2013.  If I could, I would go every year.  Nothing beats running through the parks and having Cinderella, Ariel, Snow White and the entire cast of Disney characters cheer for you!

My favorite race to watch is the Ocean State XC invite.  Beautiful, fast course, in a park, up on a hill, with trails that overlook the bay.
