The Catholic Conference Championships were held at St. John’s Prep in Danvers, highlighted by big point swings between events.  For example, Xavieran’s Dana Pagliuca and Kyle Darrow, including their role in relays, combined for 46 of the Hawk’s 85 points.  The Conference Outstanding Performer, Evan Dombrowski,  led the way in the shot as SJP took nine of the top eleven spots in the shot and discuss; while Conference MVP Jordan Samuels led  BC High taking ten of the top twelve  spots in the 100m Hurdles,  400m hurdles and triple jump.   BC High won the meet with 130 points followed by St. John’s 104.

When Dana Pagliuca won the New England’s in the Triple Jump with a 46’6” last year, it  seemed he would be untouchable for 2013.  However, with the arrival of Jordan Samuels a clash of the titans has developed, and in the league meet Samuels and Pagliuca traded monster jumps to respectively record the best  and 3rd best marks in the state.  Pagliuca went on the win the 400m in 51.3 and Samuels won the high and 400m hurdles , followed by teammates Jimmy O’Donnell and Brent Kelly.

The High Jump had four competitors over 6’00, and BC High, the event champion from the D1 State Relays, taking the first three spots.

The mile had a showdown of the two best distance sophomores in the conference, Xaverian’s Lucas Taxter and St. John’s  Josh Raposa.  A pack of 5 fought in a tight race through the half mile with Taxter making a burst.  BC High’s Ian O’Leary past Raposa, but couldn’t catch Taxter who came through in 4:26.

The 800m was arguably the most competitive race of the day, with seeds 2-8 all having seed times within one second of one another.  Xaverian’s Robert Marcantonio (1:57.8) led from wire to wire, with wild and dense jockeying going on behind him.  The final straight away looked more like a 100m finish with runners taking up most lanes and multiple place changes in the last steps toward the line. Prep’s Sanford in 2nd , the victors  brother from BC High took third,  CM’s Ryan Reed 4th and MC’s Andrew Kelly  5th, all within a second within one another.

St. John’s had three  of the top four places in the two mile, foreshadowing a strong lineup for the  fall, while, Xaverian took both the 4x100 and 4x400 relays.
