Narragansett Girls Join Elite Class

FITCHBURG —  Either Lunenburg High or Bromfield School had won the 14 previous Central Mass. Division 2 indoor track titles, but that changed Sunday night at Fitchburg High with the announcement of a new sheriff in the area.

Narragansett Regional won three events, relying on the shot put and distance events, including the 4x880 relay late in the meet, to edge Uxbridge High 56 points to 53 for the title. Lunenburg finished third with 46.

“We've worked so hard these last couple years and we've always been that second-place team,” said junior Anna Capps, who gave the Warriors an early victory in the 2 mile, winning handily with a time of 12:11.89. “We have the talent on our team, but we've never had a good meet here. We just worked so hard.”

Capps joined with her twin sister, Renee, as well as Kylie Chartier and Krista Webb as 'Gansett won the 4x880 relay (10:09.39) by over 40 seconds.

“The middle of our season was a kind of rough, but the last few week they've just put their heads down and they've been determined,” coach Ben Gagnon said. “We've always been behind Lunenburg and Bromfield — for good reason, they're both outstanding programs — but it feels good to finally come out on top.”

Narragansett junior Gaelin Farrell smashed the four-year-old meet record in the shot put, with her toss of 36-3-1/2, beating the old mark by exactly 1-1/2 feet.

Farrell said the will to win is what matters during the actual event, but that boys' track coach Bob Roache and new strength coach John Beary have combined to help 'Gansett's shot put athletes reach new heights. Senior Amanda Stewart (31-3) finished third, while the Warriors also had the boys' winner (Charles Montalbano).
