Sutton Boys Win Division 2 District E

Sutton High has won the Central Mass. Division 2 boys' Indoor Track Championships every other year for a while now, so even though the Sammies were not favored to win it all Sunday night at Fitchburg High, it comes as no surprise that Sutton pulled off its fifth title in the past decade.

The Sammies needed all the points they could get entering the relay portion of the meet and they just about swept, pocketing a near-perfect 28 points from the three relays, winning the 4x220 and 4x440 and finishing second in the 3,200.

Sutton won the final event, the 1,600 relay, with a time of 3:54.54, with Tom Gilbert, Haydn Melia, Jason Dimmick and Eric Bater combing for the points that put the perennial champs over the top. The Sammies edged Auburn High, 50-1/2 points to 48.

“After being third in the (Dual Valley Conference), we didn't come here expecting to rank as high among even more teams,” Melia said. “The turning moment had to be when the four by eight got second place because we were hoping there was maybe an outside chance they would pick up a sixth and then we knew the four by four was going to kill, so when they got second that chanced everything.”

“We have such a strong team aspect at Sutton,” Gilbert said. “The four by four is a great example of that and we all just come together and do what we need to.”
