Former Warrior Gregorek Third At BU Meet

Former Seekonk great Johnny Gregorek (2) finished third at Sunday's BU Last Chance Meet.

Edward Cheserek wasn't the only runner making some noise on Sunday.

Finishing third behind the Oregon runner's NCAA mile record of 3 minutes, 52.01 seconds at the BU Last Chance Meet was Johnny Gregorek. The former Seekonk standout, and son of two-time US Olympian John Gregorek, finished with an all-time best of 3:53.15.

Gregorek enjoyed a successful high career, winning a state indoor two-mile title as a junior in 2009. But since graduating from Seekonk a year later, his career has skyrocketed to another level. The young Gregorek competed as an undergraduate at Cornell University and ran a fifth year at Oregon, where he was a teammate of Cheserek. He now competes professionally for ASICS. Among his accomplishments over the last few years was a sixth-place finish in the 1,500-meter run at the US Olympic Trials this past summer where he clocked a solid 3:38.76. Two weeks prior to his performance at the BU meet, he was sixth in the mile at the NYRR Millrose Games with his previous indoor PR of 3:56.0. He also owns a best of 7:49 for the 3K distance.

Incidentally, Gregorek's time from Saturday's meet, along with his dad's best of 3:51.34, makes them the fastest father-son duo of all-time in the mile.
